NBA Most Improved Player Trends

*Since its inception in the 85-86 season, 37 players have won the Most Improved Player Award, and no player has won the award twice.

Pascal Siakam (2018-19) is the only player to win a championship in the same season as winning a MIP and Giannis Antetokounmpo (2016-17) is the only player to win and NBA Finals MVP.

Like most NBA awards, a player must play 65 games to win the MIP, and a player must play 20+ minutes to be credited with a game played.

2024-25 NBA Most Improved Player Prediction

Like the Defensive Player of the Year award, Victor Wembanyama is the favorite to win the MIP, but he’s already well established after winning Rookie of the Year and his expectations are sky high. I see a few players with better value, so we’ll split our bet between them for this award.

Scottie Barnes dealt with a sophomore slump in 2023 after winning Rookie of the Year in 2022. But he bounced back in a big way last season with an average of 19.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.5 blocks per game while shooting a career high 34.1% from three-point land and 78.1% from the free-throw line.

The Raptors traded away Pascal Siakam & OG Anunoby last season and signed Barnes to 5-year mega-deal worth over $200 million dollars in the offseason which are clear signs that he is the cornerstone player for the franchise.

Barnes has all the tools to be a star in the league including playmaking, defense, size & & versatility and he will have the opportunity to take the next step.

2024-25 NBA Most Improved Player Longshot Prediction

Jalen Green entered the league as a highly rated prospect when he joined the Houston Rockets as the #2 pick in the 2021 draft, but his pro career has been a mix of inconsistency and flashes of absolute brilliance.

Green showed a major improvement in his first year under head coach Ime Udoka as he averaged 19.6 points per game and in the month of March, he was arguably the best player in the NBA.

In 15 games that month, Green averaged 27.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and just under 4 assists while shooting 49% from the field and 41% from beyond the arc.

Another interesting factor is the Rockets signing center Steven Adams who is one of the best screen setters in the league.

In the last two seasons, in games with Adams on the floor, Ja Morant shot 36% from long distance over a 91-game span while shooting only 29% in 70 games without him.

Not to mention, Morant shooting 48% from the field with Adams on the court and he’ll be ready to start the season.

Green has all the talent and athleticism to win this award and unlike Barnes this is the final year of his rookie contract which will give him motivation entering unrestricted free agency.
