New Orleans Pelicans vs Minnesota Timberwolves Analysis

The Smoothie King Center will play host on Tuesday night as the Minnesota Timberwolves travel to New Orleans to do battle against the Pelicans. The Timberwolves won their fourth straight game 141-123 in Houston over Rockets, to improve to 20-20 on the season. Meanwhile the Pelicans continued to struggle with 105-101 defeat at the hands of the Toronto Raptors. The loss dropped the Pelicans to a dismal 14-26 record on the season. New Orleans has won 2 of the first 3 head-to-head matchups on the season, with the teams splitting two consecutive games in Minnesota early in the season. The Pelicans also won the most recent matchup 110-96 at home in late November. This will be the 4th and final matchup between these teams on the season.

Timberwolves Going For Fifth Straight Win

The Minnesota Timberwolves are currently on a four game winning streak with wins over the Clippers, Thunder twice and Rockets. In their most recent victory over the Houston Rockets Karl Anthony-Towns poured in 40 points on 15 of 25 from the floor with nine rebounds and seven assists. Jarred Vanderbilt also shot 10 for 14, finishing with 21 points and 19 rebounds. Minnesota averages 109.6 points a game, which ranks them 12th in the league. However, they have been firing on all cylinders recently, as they have averaged 124 points in their last four contests. On defense the T’wolves are 19th allowing 108.7 points per game. Patrick Beverley is questionable tonight with a calf injury.

Pelicans Must Score

The New Orleans Pelicans are 25th in the NBA in scoring with an average of 105.2 points per game. The Pels have shot poorly, ranking 25th in field goal percentage and 26th from beyond the arc. In Sunday’s four point loss to Toronto, Brandon Ingram scored 22 points with Jonas Valanciunas scoring 20 points and snagging 19 rebounds. Defensively the Pels are 21st as they allow over 110 points a game. Like many teams, New Orleans has been hit hard with Covid issues and injuries, but they are relatively healthy right compared to the past two weeks. The biggest question right now is whether or not Zion Williamson will see action this season. Regardless if he plays or not, it won’t be Tuesday night against the Timberwolves.

New Orleans Pelicans vs Minnesota Timberwolves Prediction

The Minnesota Timberwolves are favored by 3.5 points with a total set at 227. Minnesota has been on a roll recently, they have won their last four games and are 6-0 against the spread in their last six road games. The last nine Twolves victories have all been by five points or more. As for the Pelicans, 10 of their last 13 losses have been by double digits. The total has gone over in 12 of Minnesota’s last 17 games. They have scored an average of 124 points in their last four games with a ridiculous average of 138 in their past two. I’m going ride with the team in better form and take a shot laying 3.5 points with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

OFFICIAL PLAY: Timberwolves -3.5

New Orleans Pelicans vs Minnesota Timberwolves Preview from GoldSheet

This is the 4th meeting between these two this season, with Minnesota winning 2 of 3, but New Orleans covering 2 of 3, with all going under the total. The first two games were both in New Orleans, played Oct. 23 & 25 at the Target Center, a split straight up with the Pelicans covering both. The most recent encounter was just before Thanksgiving here at Smoothie King with the Timberwolves taking a 66-50 halftime lead and coasting to the win behind 28 pts. and 10 boards from Karl-Anthony Towns. Towns averaged 28 ppg & 9.3 rpg in the three games, with F Anthony Edwards at 22 ppg and 8.3 rpg, while PG D’Angelo Russell was a very uncharacteristic 11 ppg and 25% (ouch!!) shooting in 3 games vs. the Pelicans, who are losers in 4 of last 5 straight up. Minnesota has won four straight, ranking first in offensive efficiency in the win streak, and not coincidentally that roughly corresponds to the return of Mnnesota’s Towns, Edwards, Russell and PF Jarred Vanderbilt from the quarantine list.
Play Minnesota.
