Phoenix Suns vs Boston Celtics Predictions
- Phoenix Suns -4 vs Boston Celtics
- Total: 213.5 Points
- Phoenix has won 19 of its last 20 games, but the point spreads have caught up. The Suns are 4-8 against the spread in their last 12 games.
In the second game of a Friday night ESPN double-header the Boston Celtics will visit the Suns at the Footprint Center in Phoenix. This will be the last game in a 5 game West Coast road trip for the 13-13 Boston Celtics. The 20-4 Phoenix Suns are coming off a 108-104 home victory over the San Antonio Spurs their last time out. This will the first of two meetings between these teams as they will meet again on New Years Eve day.
The Phoenix Suns have won 11 of their first 13 home games and at 20-4 sit only a half game back of the Golden State Warriors for best record in the league. Over the past three games the Suns have been without their top player in Devin Booker; who strained his hamstring on November 30th against the Warriors. But, the rest of the rotation has stepped up nicely as they have won 2 of those 3 games.
On the season, Booker leads the team in scoring with 23.2 points a game while DeAndre Ayton leads the team in rebounds with 11.1 a game. Chris Paul is straw that stirs the drink with a team leading 10.1 assists per game. This team is firing on all cylinders and look scary on both sides of the ball. They rank top five in both offensive and defensive rating, while also leading the association in shooting at 47.9%. The Suns fell just short last season in the championship against the Milwaukee Bucks. However it’s been anything but a hangover so far early in this season.
This has been a brutal road skid for the Boston Celtics so far, losing to the Jazz, Lakers and Clippers. Their only win was a blowout of the Portland Trailblazers, who were without superstar Damien Lillard. Last game was really ugly as they lost to a Clippers team without Paul George, while committing 22 turnovers and shooting only 31% from beyond the arc.
The Celtics will once again be without one of their top players in Jaylen Brown, who has missed the last handful of games with a hamstring strain. Jayson Tatum is the teams leading scorer with 25.7 points a game, while Al Horford leads the team in rebounding with 8.1 a game.
The Celtics play solid defense as they ranked 9th in defensive rating, but struggle on offense sitting at 19th in offensive rating. The Celtics came into the season with high expectations, however they continue to disappoint and could fall below .500 with a loss on Friday night.
Phoenix is favored by four points with a total set at 213.5. The Celtics are only 1-5 against the spread in their last 6 games in Phoenix. The under is 8-3-1 in the Celtics last 12 road games. While the under is also 10-4 in the Suns last 14 games on 3 days rest or more.
The Celtics have been dreadful on the road, this trip in particular has been brutal. I’m a Celtics fan and I don’t see how you could back the Celtics here, even without Booker playing for the Suns. The Suns are a well-rounded and well-rested team and without Jaylen Brown the Celtics will lack the scoring to keep up. Our official plays will be on Suns laying the points and the under.

Phoenix Suns vs Boston Celtics Analysis from The GoldSheet
Boston reeling from back-to-back Staples Center losses to the Lakers and Clippers Tuesday and Wednesday, now Ime Udoka’s Celtics go into the fire, visiting Phoenix side that’s 19-1 SU in its last 20. Early number seems cheap, but the Suns are just 4-8 vs. the points in their last 12, leading scorer G Devin Booker remains sidelined and the Suns have dropped from 111 ppg on the season on the season, to 106 ppg in the 3 games Booker has missed. Boston not 100% yet either, as G Jaylen Brown will sit this one out, missing his 5th consecutive game with a hamstring injury. Phoenix under in 4 of last 5 although note Celtic defense failing (28th in efficiency last 4; 3-1 over in that run). Play Phoenix.
