Phoenix Suns vs Dallas Mavericks Betting Preview
WagerTalk handicapper and renowned Daily Fantasy expert Ben Burns provides his predictions and player prop from tonight’s showdown between the Dallas Mavericks and the Phoenix Suns.
Recall that these teams were involved in an exciting playoff series last season. The Mavericks would ultimately win in “blowout fashion” in Game 7, right here at Footprint Center.
This will be this season’s third meeting. In both previous cases, the home team has finished on top. Down by 17 points at halftime, the Suns battled back to eke out a 2-point win here, back in October, on Opening Night. The Mavericks covered the spread, as 4-point underdogs.
The second game wasn’t nearly as close. Playing on its home floor, Dallas was listed as a 3-point favorite. The revenge-minded Mavericks led from wire-to-wire and finished with a convincing 130-111 victory.
With a low point spread, tonight’s game figures to be closer. Let’s take a closer look.

Phoenix Suns vs Dallas Mavericks Betting Analysis
The Dallas Mavericks travel to Footprint Center in Phoenix to take on the Suns. After a horrible 2-12 stretch, Phoenix has turned the corner.
Despite the fact that Devin Booker remains out, the Suns have won and covered each of their past four games. The return of Cameron Johnson has played an important role. Most recently, the Suns crushed Charlotte by 31 points.
The Mavericks’ recent results have been a bit of a mirror image from the Suns. While Phoenix was getting pummeled over Christmas, Dallas went on a 7-game winning steak.
Since that time, however, the Mavericks are just 3-9. They’ve lost each of their last two games. Last time out, they fell by a single point, 127-126 to the Wizards.
Phoenix Suns vs Dallas Mavericks Prediction : Will The Dallas Defense Show Up?
The Mavericks have been inconsistent on the defensive end of the floor this season. Giving up 127 points to the Wizards is inexcusable.
Spencer Dinwiddie said as much: “We shouldn’t be in a game like that with them. We should be able to stop them enough to where our 126 points beats their 125 or less. Like, that’s really all it comes down to. I mean, we just got to be better in that respect. They’re not playing for nothing, for real. You know what I mean? …”
Dinwiddie and co. can be better defensively. They showed that in last week’s 115-90 victory over the Miami Heat. The question is: which Dallas team will show up tonight?
Home Sweet Home
As mentioned, the home team is already 2-0 in the season series. That’s not surprising, as both teams have been far better on their home floor.
The Mavericks are 8-15 on the road but 17-9 at American Airlines Center. Conversely, the Suns are 7-17 on the road but 18-7 here at Footprint Center.
While the Mavericks allow 116.2 ppg on the road, the Suns allow 108.7 ppg at home. Will that homecourt advantage be enough to overcome the absence of Devin Booker, as well as players like Cameron Payne and Landry Shamet? Note that all three of those players scored in double-digits in the last Dallas/Phoenix clash.
Phoenix Suns vs Dallas Mavericks Player Prop Prediction – Betting Player Prop Pick
This game is expected to be close with the Phoenix Suns favored by 1.5 points and with a total of 220.5. I’m not going to mess with the side or total. Rather, I’m going to focus on a Luka Doncic player prop.
Doncic had 33 points in the last meeting and he had 35 points in the Opening Night game, here at Phoenix. He had 41 points last time out and he averages 33.8 points per game, on the season.
Everyone knows how good Doncic and many recreational bettors love backing him. He’s the most costly option on today’s DFS board for a reason. That popularity brings an expensive price tag.
It’s worth mentioning that Doncic doesn’t typically score quite as much on the road (32.8 ppg) as he does at home (34.8 ppg). In a road game where Dallas is looking to improve defensively, while facing a stingy Suns team, I feel his total points number will prove to be a little too high.
