Phoenix Suns vs Memphis Grizzlies Analysis
The Suns are coming off a loss to their nemesis the Golden State Warriors on Christmas Day, and they will welcome the Memphis Grizzlies tonight as Memphis broke a three game losing streak by beating the Sacramento Kings last night behind a big game from Desmond Bane.
Jae Crowder is now out under the league protocols as is Dillon Brooks, but besides those two these teams are operating with full rosters. The Suns are 8-point favorites, and the total sits at 221 points, let’s take a look and see if a play presents itself.
The surprising stat still holds with the Grizzlies and Ja Morant, and while Morant’s talent is unquestioned, the records don’t lie. The Grizzlies are 10-12 with Morant in the lineup, and 10-2 without him in the lineup. There could be several reasons for this strange record, but one of them is that they played a stretch of 12 games against teams with records below .500 or with big injuries. So maybe we take those records with a grain of salt.
The Grizzlies have been good on the road this season as they are 10-5 ATS and 7-3 ATS this season and they are 7-1 straight up in their last eight with their lone loss being a nine point loss to Golden State. There is a noticeable trend with the Grizzlies and their losses and totals. Their last four losses have gone under the total and they’ve scored 104, 99, 199 and 96 in those games. In their last six wins they’ve scored 113 or more in five of those, and they are 4-2 to the over in those. So when they win, the points pour in, but when they lose they put up low offensive totals.
Phoenix is having a fantastic year as they are 24-6, all losses coming to Western Conference opponents, and they are 25-3 their last 28 games with two of the losses coming to Golden State. It’s safe to say this is a top two team in the league. ATS is a bit of a different story though as they are 15-17 ATS on the season, but they are 4-1 ATS at home their last five with the one loss being to the Warriors.
Phoenix has also started going over their game total as they are 4-1 to the over in their last five games, and 4-1 to the over in their last five home games, and I’m sure it’s no coincidence that those overs have started occurring with the return of Devin Booker.
Phoenix is really good, and the numbers on defense are impressive as they are top half in guarding each position, and I without Dillon Brooks tonight it’s all going to be on the shoulders of Desmond Bane and Ja Morant, and with the exception of the terrible defense of Sacramento, the Grizzlies opponents have been able to slow them down since Morant’s return.
The Suns have gone under this total in 10 out of their last 12 games, and I expect the Suns defense to slow down Memphis enough to win while staying under. The spread seems a bit high, and so does the total, but my official play will be on the under.
OFFICIAL PLAY: Under 221 Points

Phoenix Suns vs Memphis Grizzlies Preview from GoldSheet
Phoenix has won and covered three-straight against Memphis, and the games have not been close, with the Sun victories coming by 25, 23 and 31 points. The first meeting this season was 119-94 at the FedEx Forum, with Chris Paul scoring 15 pts., dishing 12 assists, and collecting 5 steals, while Jae Crowder and Devin Booker had 17 pts. apiece. The Griz shot just 38% as a team and squandered a 59-46 rebound edge, making only 7 of 33 FGs while the Suns were a blistering 18 of 37 (49% from beyond the arc).
Both sides have some covid issues, with principals being Memphis G Dillon Brooks (19 ppg) and Sun F Jae Crowder. Ja Morant had 26 pts. and 12 rebs. in first meeting, but Deandre Ayton wasn’t available (or needed) in order for Phoenix to take care of business. The Grizzlies beat up Sacramento last night, 127-102 at the Golden 1 Center, and are just 3-8 vs. the points on the road in the 2nd night of back-to-back games last 1+ seasons. Play the Under.
