Portland Trail Blazers vs Phoenix Suns Analysis

The Portland Trailblazers host the Phoenix Suns in a Western Conference showdown between two teams who won their openers.

The Suns outmatched the Dallas Mavericks 107-105 on Wednesday evening. Meanwhile the Blazers took home a 115-108 victory over the Sacramento Kings with a strong 4th quarter push.

This will be the first of four head-to-head meetings between these clubs, Phoenix won the 2021-22 series 3-1. Tip-off is scheduled for 10:10 PM EST/7:10 PST from the Moda Center in Portland.

Lillard Returns & Blazers Prevail

The Portland Trailblazers took care of business with a 115-108 victory on the road in Sacramento against the Kings. The Blazers took control in the second half, outscoring the Kings by 11 points including a 7 point advantage in the 4th quarter. Portland patrolled the paint where they outscored Sacramento 56-38. Jerami Grant led his team in scoring with 23 point while four other players contributed 11 points or more. Damian Lillard scored 20 points but shot a horrendous 5 for 18 from the field including going 1 for 8 from three-point land. The Blazers once again look to be a high scoring team that still has concerns on defense. They re-signed big man Jusuf Nurkic in the off-season and he had 8 points and 7 boards in the opener. He and newly acquired Jerami Grant will need to ratchet up their defensive efforts against a high scoring Suns team.

Suns Win Revenge Game Over Mavericks

The Phoenix Suns got some form of revenge over the Dallas Mavericks with a 107-105 triumph in their opener. Their victory was similar to that of the Blazers as they outscored Dallas 62-43 in the second half.

They also5 outscored their opponent in the paint by the margin of 56-36. Devin Booker paced Phoenix with 28 points on 10 of 20 from the field. DeAndre Ayton had an 18 point, 10 rebound double double after almost leaving the organization during the offseason.

Chris Paul shot only 1 for 6 from the field but had 9 assists. The Suns have a talented young team, they need to have a short memory after getting knocked out in the first round last season.

Portland Trail Blazers vs Phoenix Suns Prediction

The Phoenix Suns enter this contest as 5 point road favorites with a total set at 224. Last season the Blazers were the 4th highest scoring team in the league while the Suns were the second highest scoring team. It’s a high total but you almost have to lean towards the over.

However we are going to be looking at a points + rebounds + assists under from a long time superstar. Chris Paul and the Suns apparently dealt with some unreported Covid issues during the post-season and Paul seemed tentative on opening night.

He only played 30 minutes, while shooting a putrid 1 for 6 from the field for 6 points. Four of his points were scored at the free throw line. Pauls PRA total is set at 27.5 and there is no way he gets there without double digits in points.

There is the potential for a blowout and if that occurs Paul will be first to sit. Let’s take his under on PRA’s in case he scores more, which would ultimately bring down his assist numbers.
