Sacramento Kings vs Portland Trail Blazers Analysis

The Portland Trailblazers and Sacramento Kings open their seasons on Wednesday night from the Golden 1 Center. The Kings finished the 2021-22 campaign with a 30-52 record, landing in 12th place in the Western Conference.

The Trailblazers just behind them in the West with a 27-55 record and will have a new look in 2022-23. Portland won the head-to-head series 2-1 last season. Tip-off is scheduled for 10:00 PM EST/7:00 PST from the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.

Kings Embrace Youth Movement

The Sacramento Kings are in rebuild of sorts with a new head coach in Mike Brown. The overhaul began last season as they traded away Tyrese Haliburton and Buddy Hield for Domantas Sabonis.

The Kings also added Iowa foward Keegan Murray with the #4 overall pick in the NBA Draft. Next Sacramento next went to the free agent market with the addition of shooting guard Kevin Huerter.

Moving Haliburton was a sign that this Kings team plans on building around the Kentucky product De’Aaron Fox. Fox was the #5 pick in 2017 and average 23.2 points and 5.6 assists a game.

Last season the Kings ranked 25th in scoring and only 27th in points allowed. The Kings have a young nucleus that should make for some intriguing seasons moving foward.

Lillard Returns To Fold For Blazers

The Portland Trailblazers are coming off their worst season in over a decade as they missed the post-season for the first time in 13 years. They finished at 13th place in the Western Conference, while ranking dead last in defensive efficiency and 28th in both field goal and three-point shooting percentage against.

Having their superstar Damian Lillard back will obviously make a tremendous difference. Lillard was limited to only 29 games last season, while averaging 24 points and 7.3 assists a game.

The Blazers will continue to build around him as he received a contract extension through the 2026-27 season.

The Blazers added two-way foward Jerami Grant who arrived via trade from the Detroit Pistons and Shaedon Sharpe in the first round of the NBA Draft. Portland still has an uphill battle to make the playoffs in the Western Conference.

Sacramento Kings vs Portland Trail Blazers Prediction

The Sacramento Kings are -3 point favorites against Portland Trailblazers with a total of 229. Once again, I would find it difficult to choose a side this early in the season between two young evenly matched teams.

Damian Lillard will obviously take on his normal role as the superstar on the Trailblazers. But who else will end up stuffing the stat sheet on this squad? Jusuf Nurkic is coming off an injury which will limit minutes while Anfernee Simons is inconsistent while trying to fill the void left by CJ McCollum.

That leaves opportunities for both Josh Hart and Jerami Grant to load up statistically. Grants point total is only 17.5, a total he cleared in 9 of his last 11 games with full minutes last season.

The total and spread set up beautifully for overs tonight and someone outside of Lillard needs to score some points on this team. Let’s go with the over for Grants point total.
