Suns vs Mavericks Analysis

The Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns play Game 2 of their best of seven NBA playoff series on Wednesday night in Phoenix. The Mavs trail the series 1-0 after losing 121-114 on Monday night. Each of the five starters for the Suns scored double digit points as they shot over 50% from the field.

DeAndre Ayton scored a team high 25 points, while Devin Booker added 23 points of his own. Luka Doncic scored 45 points for the Mavs on over 50% shooting, while the rest of the team shot 38%. Phoenix controlled the boards, outrebounding the Mavs 51-36. Tip-off is scheduled for 10:00 PM EST.

Luka Or Bust For Mavs

It’s nothing new for Luka Doncic but he led his team in all three categories of points, rebounds and assists in Game 1. Doncic fell just short of a triple double with 45 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists.

The next leading scorer was Maxi Klieber with 19 points, next in rebounds Reggie Bullock with six and in assists Spencer Dinwiddie with four.

Doncic shot the lights out, while his teammates shot 38%. If the Mavs want to beat a complete team like the Suns, you are going to need more of a team effort, especially in a best of seven series. Dallas will also need to play far better defense as they allowed the Suns to score 121 points on over 50% shooting in Game 1.

The Mavs were one of top three defensive teams all season and they had held opponents to less than 100 points a game on average over their last 6 post-season games.

Dallas will need to control the pace and ratchet up their defense if they want to avoid going down 0-2. If they can steal a win, they will also snatch homecourt advantage as the series shifts to Dallas.

Suns Could Improve On Defense

The Phoenix Suns looked great in Game 1 from a shooting and rebounding perspective, however their defense could definitely be improved.

The Suns shot over 50% and scored 121 points while winning the rebounding battle by 15. They allowed a slow-paced Dallas offense to score 114 points in Game 1. They have allowed an average of 110.4 points per game between Game 1 and the six games against the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Suns have overcome their defensive shortcomings by scoring at will, but they will need to improve as the playoffs move along and they face stiffer competition. Phoenix has scored an average of 112.7 points a game on 52% shooting during the post-season.

DeAndre Ayton has stepped up his game and led his team in scoring with 25 points. Devin Booker played the role of facilitator with a team leading 8 assists and 9 rebounds. The Suns will be looking to take a commanding 2-0 lead into Dallas this weekend.

Suns vs Mavericks Prediction

The Phoenix Suns enter this game as 6-point home favorites with a total of 216. The Mavs need to step up on defense and at least slow down the scorching hot Suns.

Dallas knows they don’t have the talent to keep up if Phoenix keeps scoring at this pace, they aren’t the Utah Jazz after all. The Suns have shot over 50% in seven straight playoff games and Dallas let them shoot over 40% from beyond the arc in Game 1.

Here’s the issue, even if they cut the Suns shooting down to 40-45% that puts the Suns around 110-115 points. I’m going make small play on the Suns team total OVER 111.5 as the Suns continue their torrid pace.

Prediction: Phoenix Suns Team Total Over 111.5
