Thunder vs Spurs Analysis

The San Antonio Spurs are in the midst of their annual Rodeo Road Trip and their next stop is against the lowly Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder are coming off an intense overtime win at Madison Square Garden vs the Knicks, while the Spurs are coming off a decisive loss vs the Bulls.

The Spurs are averaging 118.4 points per game over their last five while the Thunder are only scoring 102.2. These two teams spilt their first two matchups, so let’s breakdown who will come out on top of the rubber match between these two teams.

Thunder’s Season-Long Struggles

The Thunder are 1-5 in their last six contests and are in the running for worst team in the Western Conference. However, from a betting perspective, the Thunder are 3-0 against the spread during their last three contests.

The key factors for tonight’s matchup is whether or not the Thunder will have two of their starters in the lineup. Leading scorer Shai Gligeous-Alexander and glue guy Lou Dort are both expected to miss their second consecutive starts. Without these two in the lineup, the Thunder will have a hard time scoring on the Spurs.

Spurs Need a Win

The Spurs are 2-2 so far during their Rodeo Road Trip, and a win against the Thunder is exactly what the Spurs need. The last time these two teams met was in January in San Antonio, and the Spurs won by 22 and covered the spread of -7.

The Spurs are a sound defensive team and they should stop the Thunder’s lackluster offense. The Spurs rank seventh in defensive efficiency on the road this season while the Thunder rank dead last in offense.

Thunder vs Spurs Prediction

Without their leading scorer SGA, the Thunder will certainly struggle to generate offense against a stout defensive team. The Spurs need all the moment they can get right now for a stretch run, and beating up on a lesser team may be exactly what they need.

I am leaning toward the under 218 in this contest, and I would put a couple bucks aside for some potential live-betting opportunities. Oklahoma City might start out hot after riding some momentum from the OT win over the Knicks, which might bump this total up a couple points with a hot start in the first quarter. But over the course of 48 minutes, the Thunder are going to struggle to light up the scoreboard.

Thunder vs Spurs Preview from GoldSheet

The Rodeo Road Trip gets past its halfway point tonight for the Spurs, who to this point have done about as well as could be expected when splitting the first four, not really losing any ground in the race for the West’s last play-in spot that Coach Pop expects to still be within reach when his team eventually returns home to AT&T Center on March 3.

OKC has only dropped two spread decisions across the past nine games, and even coming up with an OT win on Monday at MSG when minus top scorers SGA and Lu Dort vs. the disappointing Knicks. Aussie rookie Josh Giddey, however, more than stepped into the breach with a career-high 28 points and his second consecutive triple-double.

After winning in Atlanta and New Orleans earlier in the trip, not too far-fetched to assume Pop can steal another win here, especially with recent encouraging signs re: ex-FSU youngster Devin Vassell, who has moved into the starting lineup after the Derrick White trade to Boston and appears to be developing a budding partnership with Dejounte Murray, who’s scoring 24 ppg this month.
