Utah Jazz vs Philadelphia 76ers Predictions

  • Utah Jazz -9.5 vs Philadelphia 76ers
  • Total: 216 Points
  • The 76ers are 7-23-1 against the spread in their last 31 games as a road underdog.
  • The 76ers are 7-1 against the spread in the last eight meetings between these two teams.
  • The over is 11-5 in the Jazz’s last 16 home games.

Philadelphia 76ers (8-6, 3rd in NBA – Atlantic) are in Salt Lake City to oppose the Utah Jazz (8-5, 2nd in NBA – NorthWest). Utah Jazz will host the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA on Tuesday at 10 PM EST. The Jazz was last seen failing to serve Vivint Arena in a 111-105 loss to the Miami Heat. The 76ers lost a fourth straight on Saturday night in Indianapolis when the Pacers earned 118-113 victory on the Gainbridge Fieldhouse hardwood.

The injury-riddled 76ers dropped home games to the New York Knicks, Milwaukee Bucks, and Toronto Raptors before traveling to Indianapolis on Saturday. The 118-113 defeat to Indy coincided with the Sixers All-NBA center Joel Embiid missing all four games after testing positive for COVID-19.

Tyrese Maxey has done his part offensively in the absence of Embiid. Maxey added 24 points in Saturday’s loss to Indianapolis. The other three games Embiid was sidelined found Maxey connecting for 33 against the Raptors, 31 versus the Bucks, and 16 points against the New York Knicks in the Nov 8 loss that saw Philadelphia without Embiid, Tobias Harris, Tyrese Matisse Thybulle, and Isaiah Joe.

Thybulle missed his fifth consecutive game because of health and safety protocols on Saturday night. In addition, the 76ers announced that assistant coach Dave Joerger is taking a leave of absence to undergo chemotherapy and radiation treatments to combat a treatable form of cancer.

Philadelphia is most likely to have a Tuesday night lineup in Salt Lake that plays small. The standard first five consist of Maxey, Harris, Seth Curry, Furkan Korkmaz, and Andre Drummond. The starting five – as mentioned earlier – for the Sixers have played a total of just 14 possessions together this season.

With the Sixers expected to send the combination of Maxey, Curry, Korkmaz, Harris, and Drummond to center circle in Salt Lake tonight, as well, without Embiid (Health and Safety Protocol), Danny Green (hamstring), and Thybulle (Health and Safety Protocol) the 76ers player personnel that will be active own an abysmal net rating in the neighborhood of -50.0.

After a 7-1 start, Utah has lost four of its past five games, and the game logs across the roster last five contests offer evidence of why this talented group hasn’t been good enough to earn victories. The Jazz’s defense has surrendered 114.5 points per 100 possessions in the team’s last five games. That 114.5 points per that the Jazz currently wears around their neck is worse than any of the current 30 Association franchises have as a team through the first 10-15 games this 2021 season.

Tyler Herro had 27 points and eight rebounds, Duncan Robinson made six 3-pointers and added a season-high 22 points, and Kyle Lowry connected for 21 points in the second and last meeting between the Jazz and the Heat this season. Miami swept the two-game 2021-22 Jazz series and knocked that monkey off their back-breaking a three-game slide.

“We were physically and mentally ready to go into this game,” Lowry told the media in the presser that followed the Heat victory over the Jazz. “We lost three games on this road trip — two of them we had an opportunity to win. We just got to continue to build, and today was a good building block for us,” Lowry added.

The Jazz own the second-best net rating (+7.9) in the league formed by their 113.9 points per 100 possessions and 106.0 points allowed per. The last two weeks find the Jazz with a less-than +2.8 net, a 114.6 pts/per, and 111.8 pts/per allowed according to Cleaning the Glass and the websites “League Summary” that provide and supply important NBA metrics.

The Jazz are an elite defense, especially when Rudy Gobert is protecting the rim. Gobert leads the team in defensive metrics with 15.3 rebounds (league leader) and 1.7 blocks per game.

Utah Jazz vs Philadelphia 76ers Injury Report

76ers: Danny Green: day today (hamstring), Matisse Thybulle: day today (health and safety protocols) are listed as game-time decisions, but all indications point to the pair being inactive tonight. Ben Simmons: (back), Joel Embiid: (health and safety protocols), and Grant Riller: (knee) have been ruled out.

Jazz: Rudy Gay (Assigned to G league) is out for tonight’s game in Salt Lake.

Cross-reference the player personnel status that I outlined above with an updated report from NBA.com at this official injury link. If Thybulle is inactive and the above-projected starting lineup for the Sixers is as I have outlined, then the Jazz is a solid investment. Additionally, if and when Utah announces that Thybulle is inactive, it will create an overreaction sending the Joe’s to the window and their phone some late movement on the current Jazz -9.5 point handicap moving it closer to a 10-point or more spread.

Utah Jazz vs Philadelphia 76ers Analysis from The GoldSheet

Utah opened with a teaser, winning and covering its first four games, but has lost four of its last five straight-up and against the points while dropping to 20th in net rating in the downturn. In the last five, Utah has been outrebounded and outshot with Donovan Mitchell making less than 31% of his 3-pointers. Philly, however, has its own set of problems, with Covid removing Sixer C Joel Embiid and two backups from action, while Danny Green is iffy with a touchy hamstring. The Sixers are 6-2 straight-up and 7-1 against the number against the Jazz, but it’s hard to go with just Tobias Harris and Seth Curry who’ve seen their effectiveness from outside begin to melt a bit of late.
