Utah Jazz vs Phoenix Suns Analysis
The Utah Jazz play host to the Phoenix Suns at Vivant Arena for the second game of ESPN’s Wednesday night doubleheader. The Suns beat the Jazz 2nd string squad 115-109 in Phoenix on Monday in the first of two consecutive head-to-head matchups.
The Phoenix win impoved their NBA best record to 37-9. The Jazz backups fought the good fight but ultimately lost, dropping their record to 30-18. These teams will meet again in late February and again in early March.
Red Hot Suns
Monty Williams Phoenix Suns controlled the first half against the short-handed Utah Jazz, but let them creep back into the game and take an early 4th quarter lead. The Suns rallied the troops and ultimately prevailed 115-109.
A win is a win and the Suns have now stacked seven in a row as well as 10 of their last 11 games. Devin Booker led the way with 33 points, while 3 players scored 20+ points. Chris Paul fell one rebound short of a triple double with 27 points, 14 assists and 9 rebounds. The Suns have built this streak while being undermanned themselves.
Cameron Payne still doesn’t have a timetable for return from his wrist injury. DeAndre Ayton, Jae Crowder and Javale McGee will all be unavailable for Wednesday nights game with various allments. The Suns rank 3rd with 112.5 points scored a game and 6th with 104.6 points allowed per game.
Jazz Backups Fought Hard
It would be easier to list the players that were available as opposed to unavailable for the Jazz Monday night against Phoenix. They were essentially without all of their starters but still managed to keep it close, even taking a short lived 4th quarter lead before falling short 115-109.
Jordan Clarkson led the team with 22 points and was one of seven players to finish with double digits. Donovan Mitchell (concussion) and Rudy Gobert (calf) have both been ruled out for Wednesday night’s rematch with Phoenix. Bojan Bogdanovic, Royce O’Neale and Joe Ingles are all questionable as they Jazz hope for at least some of them to return.
The Jazz remain the #1 scoring offense in the league with 114 points a game, despite the mounting injuries. On defense they rank 12th with 107.3 points allowed per game.
Utah Jazz vs Phoenix Suns Prediction
The Phoenix Suns are 1.5 point favorites with a total of 223.5. Phoenix is 25-21 against the spread while Utah is 21-26-1. Both these teams will be without key players that will effect their defense more than their offense. Without Gobert and Ayton the paint will be much easier navigate.
These teams rank first and third in scoring and are top three in field goal percentage and top ten in three point percentage. Four of their last five head-to-head meetings surpassed tonight’s total with an average of 223.6 points scored. This is a tough game to handicap and there are better picks on tonight’s card, but we will make a small play on the over.
Official Play: OVER 223.5

Utah Jazz vs Phoenix Suns Preview from GoldSheet
Phoenix is 5-1 straight up and against the points in the past five meetings, but the last time these teams met was the first meeting this season and the lone Utah cover in that span, when the Jazz were catching 12½ pts. at Phoenix just two nights ago.
The Suns got vintage backcourt play from Chris Paul (27 pts. on 17 shots with 14 assists and 9 boards in 40 minutes) while Devin Booker had 33 pts (although on a much less-efficient 35 points. The Suns dominated the boards in that one, holding a 51-38 edge on the boards.
Obviously, the recent concussion injury of Utah G Donovan Mitchell and calf strain of C Rudy Gobert (both ruled out again here already) has a major impact, although swingman/sixth man Joe Ingles is expected to resume activity, probably starting for Mitchell.
Conversely, the Suns will again be missing C Deandre Ayton and his backup JaVale McGee, along with PF Jae Crowder. The Jazz are just 2-7-1 last 10 against the points overall had have lost 10 straight pointspread decisions at the Vivint Smart Home Arena, so its difficult to back the Jazz facing Suns team that’s 18-4 straight up and 14-8 vs. the number away from Arizona this season.
