NFL Regular Season Defensive Player Of The Year Trends

Sacks are one of the easiest quantifiable statistics for a defensive player to show value to their team. So, it makes sense that all of the favorites to win the award are pass rushers.

The award has been won by defensive linemen or edge rushers in 11 of the past 13 seasons. Myles Garrett won the DPOY last season after finishing top 10 in every notable category including sacks, QB hits, tackles for a loss, QB pressures and forced fumbles.

Nick Bosa won the award in 2022 after an 18.5 sack season while TJ Watt got DPOY honors after a 21.5 sack campaign in 2021.

Micah Parsons has flirted with the award, finishing as the runner-up in two of his first three seasons in the NFL. Aaron Donald has brought home DPOY honors three times in his amazing stretch with the Rams.

Maxx Crosby has emerged as one of the premier pass rushers in the league and has shown no signs of slowing down.

Crosby has posted double-digit sacks in back-to-back seasons with 14.5 in 2023 and 12.5 in 2022, both ranking in the top 10.

He recorded two forced fumbles last season and three forced fumbles in the season prior. Crosby also ranked 4th in quarterback pressures last season with 95.

His durability has been very impressive as he hasn’t missed a single game in his five-year career with 83 consecutive games. The Raiders playoff hopes remain uncertain but the potential for Crosby to lead the NFL sacks give him a great shot to win the award.

In only two seasons, Aidan Hutchinson has established himself as one of the NFLs elite pass rushers with a combined 21 sacks, 4 fumble recoveries, 4 interceptions and 3 forced fumbles.

He tallied 9.5 sacks in 2022 and improved to 11.5 sacks last season despite facing frequent double teams. Hutchinson also finished last season ranked 2nd in total quarterback pressures with 101.

His dominance extended in the postseason where he recorded three sacks in as many games. The Detroit Lions fell a field goal short of the first Super Bowl in the team’s history and they are poised for another strong season.

Hutchinson has improved in back-to-back seasons and his potential to finish top 5 in sacks combined with a Lions playoff appearance are the perfect recipe for a DPOY award.
