Anytime Touchdown Scorer Prediction 1: Juwan Johnson, Saints (Projected +280)
New Orleans Saints tight end Juwan Johnson caught for 42 passes for 508 yards and a team leading seven touchdowns during the 2022 campaign.
His seven touchdowns ranked tied for third-most among NFL tight ends. During the offseason, Johnson attended “Tight End U” the camp run by tight ends Travis Kelce & George Kittle and former tight end Greg Olsen in an effort to improve after making the transition from wide receiver to tight end last season.
This after posting a career year with Jameis Winston and Andy Dalton at quarterback. The Saints improved at the quarterback position with the signing of Derek Carr in the offseason and the two players have been building a chemistry since OTAs.
The Tennesse Titans pass defense was absolutely carved up last season, allowing the most yards (274.8/game) and more importantly they tied for second-most touchdowns allowed with 29.
Seven of those touchdowns went to opposing tight ends and while improvements were made to the pass rush, the Titans will still be vulnerable to the pass.
On top of that, Johnson won’t have to compete with Alvin Kamara for touchdowns in Week 1 as he begins a three-game suspension.
Johnson was the 7th most profitable tight end on anytime touchdown props in 2022 despite playing his first season at the position with poor play at the quarterback position.
Now he’s had an entire offseason to build a rapport with Carr and he faces a favorable matchup in Week 1, making him worthy of a small play at +280 odds.
Anytime TD Scorer Prediction 2: JK Dobbins, Ravens (Projected +110)
Baltimore Ravens running back JK Dobbins played five games (including postseason) after returning from knee surgery in Week 14 and averaged 92 rushing yards and 6.6 yards per carry on 14 carries per game.
Dobbins only scored one touchdown in those games but reeled off seven touchdowns in the final six regular season games of the 2020 campaign, the only other time he had full workload.
The Ravens have ranked top three in rushing yards in each of the past five seasons and new offensive coordinator Todd Monken plans to utilize Lamar Jackson as more of a passer than runner which will free up additional carries for the tandem of Dobbins and Gus Edwards.
The Houston Texans ranked dead last against the run in 2022 while allowing an average of a whopping 170.2 yards per game.
More importantly, they also allowed the most touchdowns to opposing running backs with 22. New head coach DeMeco Ryans did make acquisitions such as drafting stud pass rusher Will Anderson to improve the defense but expecting a huge difference in Week 1 is a stretch.
Dobbins and the Ravens will be amped up playing at home as they look to build on last season’s playoff appearance.
They have come out like gangbusters covering in six of their last seven season openers and with a 10-point spread there will be plenty of scoring to go around.
I wouldn’t back any sort of long-term props on Dobbins based on his injury history. However, he will be motivated in Week 1 against a cream puff run defense at plus money. Sign me up!
