Arizona Cardinals vs New England Patriots Preview

The New England Patriots travel to Glendale, Arizona for an interconference clash with the Cardinals on Monday Night Football. Both were playoff teams in the 2021-22 campaign but both are clinging to playoff aspirations this year.

The Cardinals currently sit at 4-8 on the season after losing a heartbreaker 25-24 against the Los Angeles Chargers, prior to their Week 13 bye. The Patriots record dipped to 6-6 after losing 24-10 at home last Thursday against the Buffalo Bills.

New England was victorious 20-17 in their last meeting with Arizona on November 29th 2020 at Gillette Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 PM EST/5:15 PST on ESPN.

The Patriot Way

The New England sit at .500 after dropping two straight nationally televised games including last Thursday against the Buffalo Bills. Mac Jones went 22 for 36 for only 195 yards and a touchdown.

Rhamondre Stevenson ran for 54 yards on 10 carries while catching 6 passes for 24 yards. The Patriots went only 3 for 12 on third down and 0 for 1 in the red zone. “There are a lot of things we need to do better” said Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.

New England ranks 24th in total offense with an average of 20.8 points per game. Defense is their calling card as they rank 6th in scoring, holding their opponents to only 18.8 points a game. Patriots running back Damien Harris is doubtful with a thigh injury.

New England’s most productive receiver Jakobi Meyers has been ruled out for this contest with a concussion, as are cornerback Jalen Mills (groin) and Isaiah Wynn (foot).

Not In The Cards

At 4-8, this has been a disappointing season for the Arizona Cardinals as many thought they would be a contender in the NFC West. Prior to their bye, they lost a 25-24 thriller on a last second two point conversion by the Los Angeles Chargers.

Kyler Murray went 18 for 29 for only 191 yards with two touchdowns and one interception while running for 56 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.

James Connor led the team in rushing with 25 carries for 120 yards while De’Andre Hopkins led the way in receiving with 87 yards and a touchdown on four receptions. The Cardinals defense ranks dead last in scoring with 26.8 points allowed per game.

The Arizona offense is middle of the pack in scoring with 22 points per game. Injuries have played a role in the offensive struggles as Hopkins missed the first six games with a suspension, they lost tight end Zach Ertz for the season and wide receiver Rondale Moore has missed the last few weeks.

Moore will be out again for this contest as will offensive lineman Rashaad Coward (chest) and cornerback Byron Murphy (back).

Arizona Cardinals vs New England Patriots Prop Prediction

The New England Patriots are 2 point road favorites with a total set at 43.5. This should be a hard fought game as both sides need this victory to have any realistic opportunity to make the post-season. In a must win, the Patriots won’t be afraid to let Mac Jones air it out.

Jones has a completions total set at 20.5, a total he has eclipsed in 7 of 9 games this season. He only fell short against the Chicago Bears in a game where he was in and out of as he shared time with Bailey Zappe.

The other game was against the stingy Colts defense where Jones still managed 20 completions. The Arizona Cardinals defense allows the 3rd most completions per game with 25.3 per game.

They have allowed 8 of 10 opposing quarterbacks to surpass this number, including Justin Herbert tossing 35 completions in their last game prior to their bye.

Arizona ranks 10th in rushing yards allowed so the easiest path is through the air. We have a close game projected and the Patriots won’t be afraid to sling it. Let’s back Jones to get the job done again with over 20.5 completions.

Prediction: Mac Jones Over 20.5 Pass Completions -122 Fanduel
