Chicago Bears vs New York Giants Analysis

Two teams that mirror each other as both have had miserable seasons, both have injuries at the quarterback position, and both are 1-4 ATS their last five games. It’s a game where fan bases of both teams might be rooting for a loss to improve their draft position, but for now the Bears are sitting at -6 favorites with a total at a putrid 36.5 points.

Sometimes these games between two bad teams can offer us value, so let’s take a look at some numbers and see if a play presents itself.

We’ll start with the Giants who have sat Daniel Jones for the season, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they do the same with Saquon Barkley as he doesn’t have explosiveness now, and I don’t know what the motivation would be for him to take more hits.

Mike Glennon has started the last four games, and has managed to lead the team to 21, 9, 6, and 10 points. The last two games he has less than 100 yards passing, and their running game has been non-existent. The defense has given up 20, 21, 37, and 34 points in those games, but they seem to play well early in the game only to wear down understandably late, and this has lead to them being a nice bet on the under in the first half their last 5 games (4-1 to the under) and on their team total (4-1 to the under).

The Bears are 2-8 their last ten games, and last week Nick Foles stepped in to get the win, and that has to be a bit concerning as the future of this team, Justin Fields, has lost six in a row. As of now it looks like it will be Justin Fields starting, and here’s an alarming stat for Fields: Justin Fields has only two games out of 12 where he’s thrown more touchdowns than interceptions. One game was Dec. 20 where he threw his only TD on the last play of the game in a loss to Minnesota to give him a stat line of one TD and no interceptions.

As of now the Bears are dead last in yards passing per game, but they do commit to the run as they average 122.7 yard per game.

It’s hard to find positive things to say about either of these teams, and it’s even harder to put your money on one of these teams to win or cover, so I won’t go near the spread in this game. Instead, I’ll play the Giants’ team total under 15.5 points.

I don’t see where the points come from for New York, and I think it’s a possibility Barkley gets put on ice for the rest of the season. The Bears can run the ball, and if they get even a touchdown lead they’ll run the ball the rest of the game and give Fields the short easy throws to give him confidence. I can’t lay the points with the Bears, but I do think they win a low scoring game, I just can’t see two TD’s and a field goal for the Giants in this one.

OFFICIAL PLAY: Giants Team Total UNDER 15.5 Points

Chicago Bears vs New York Giants Preview from GoldSheet

Including a hard-to-describe showing last week at the Linc; it takes some doing to get benched for Mike Glennon, but that’s what ex-Georgia Bulldog Jake Fromm did in his first start last week when completing 6 of 17 for 25 yards en route to a 34-10 loss. As the G-Men have been held to 13 points or fewer in five of their past six games (and no covers last four), we won’t even bother to mention the old NY-as-road-dog trend that has now gone sideways (0-4 last four), and little chance of resurrecting until next year when Daniel Jones, we assume, at least, gets back in the lineup at QB.

Even with just two spread covers its last ten games, Chicago looks a less-risky investment and might even warrant a stronger look if Nick Foles remains in the lineup at QB after leading last week’s fightback in the snow at Seattle, suggesting he still has some use as a reliever in NFL bullpens, while Justin Fields (ankle) and Andy Dalton (groin) are hurting. “Totals” alert–also keep an eye on “under” which has recurred often for these two (Giants 7-2 last nine, Bears 9-5 last 14).
