Cincinnati Bengals vs Kansas City Chiefs Analysis

Sunday’s slate features a critical AFC showdown, as the 11-4 Kansas City Chiefs travel to Cincinnati for a showdown with the 9-6 Bengals. Last week the Chiefs dismantled the Pittsburgh Steelers and won at home by the score of 36-10. Meanwhile the Bengals also won a home game in convincing fashion. They torched their division rival Baltimore Ravens to the tune of 41-21.

After an up & down start to the season the Chiefs have won 8 games in a row and have emerged as a Super Bowl favorite. The Kansas City defense has improved every step of the way this season, so season long statistics can be set aside. Although they have created 28 turnovers, which ranks 4th in the league and they have the 7th highest quarterback pressure rate.

The Chiefs’ defense is solid enough to support a highly prolific offense that is now with Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill both clearing Covid protocols. Patrick Mahomes now has 33 touchdowns and 13 interceptions on a 66% passing rate.

The Cincinnati Bengals have been pretty inconsistent recently, but their offense was firing on cylinders as they scored 41 points against the Baltimore Ravens. Joe Burrow threw for a whopping 525 passing yards, while two receivers topped 125 yards and Joe Mixon cleared 135 yards from scrimmage.

However this Bengals offense has had some clunkers along the way. They only scored 16 against Cleveland, 22 against the Chargers, 23 against San Francisco and only 16 against Denver. It seems like every time the Bengals have a big game and we anoint them as the second coming, they ultimately come crashing back down to earth for a reality check. The Cincinnati defense is a middling unit in both points and yards allowed.

Both teams are around .500 against the spread for sides and totals. The Chiefs have been on fire recently, as they are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games. The Bengals have been involved in some high scoring affairs recently, in their last five games three have seen a team score 41 or more points. Kansas City has scored at least 36 points in their last 3 games.

It also feels like the Burrow and the Bengals confidence will be at an all time high after last week’s huge game. Joe Mixon should be able to feast on a Chiefs defense that allows the 3rd most yards per carry. We are going to make over 51 our official play in what should be a shootout. I don’t have a strong feeling on a side, but I can definitely see one team scoring into the 30’s with the other scoring well into the 20’s.

Kansas City’s 36-10 dumping of Pittsburgh Sunday clinches a playoff spot and gives the Chiefs a precarious one-game lead over Tennessee in the race for the best record in the AFC, precarious because the Titans beat the Chiefs and therefore own the tiebreaker.

Cincinnati QB Joe Burrow threw for a franchise-record 525 yds. against depleted Baltimore last week. With the win, the Bengals took a commanding lead in the AFC North and need to win either this game or next weekend against Cleveland to win the division.

The Chiefs are cooking on both sides of the ball in current 8-game winning streak, which has seen their defense give up just 325 ypg and 14 ppg over the last 10 games since being blasted by Buffalo 38-20 Oct. 10. Mahomes has 8 TD passes and just 1 int. in his last 3 games and has thrown for 2217 (277 ypg) with a 15-4 ratio in 8-game winning streak since Nov. 1.
