Packers Wildcard Game Takeaways

Jordan Love had his coming out party in Green Bay’s 48-32 victory over the Cowboys. As I tweeted out, the best play I saw this weekend was when Jordan Love quickly back peddled before his TD pass that put the Packers up 20-0.

He showed outstanding awareness of the upcoming blitz, giving him just enough space to get the pass off. That’s a subtle indication of how far Love has progressed.

Several offensive and defensive players returned from injury, giving the Packers some options. Yes, the game was decided early in the 3rd quarter, but it’s not unreasonable to think that Joe Barry’s defense is going to be challenged by a near elite San Francisco offense.

49ers Strengths and Weaknesses

As with Baltimore, SF earned the #1 seed. QB Purdy (69.4%, 31 TD passes, excellent yards-per-completion) put him in the MVP discussion, while RB McCaffrey (5.4 per carry, over 2,000 rush/receiving yards, 21 TD’s) was amazing.

Along with WR Aiyuk, WR Samuel, and a healthy TE George Kittle, the 49ers have four players with 60 or more receptions.

The defense intercepted 22 passes and allowed just 3,949 passing yards on 410 completions. SF’s defense remained adept at stopping the run.

The most visible area of concern remains the pass D%, as it has been for a few years. SF allowed 66% of opposing QB pass attempts to be completed.

Green Bay Packers vs San Francisco 49ers Prediction: The PICK

It’s advantage SF when the 49ers are on offense, as the Packers do not possess the ability to fully shut down the run or the pass.

What this means is that the 49ers will be able to run their regular offense, and it will be difficult for Green Bay to key on any one person.

Conversely, the 49ers could have their hands full stopping Love and the passing game. The biggest matchup key for me is how well the Green Bay offensive line protects Love vs. a good 49er pass rush.

I wasn’t surprised with the Green Bay win last week, because Dallas runs too much of a high risk, high reward defensive scheme, which played right into Green Bay’s hands.

I would be surprised here, because the rested 49ers are healthy offensively and should be able to take advantage of Joe Barry’s defense.

It’s early in the process, but my initial lean would be OVER the total points (50 and 50.5 as I type this), and a look over for the 49ers team total.
