Hall of Fame Game Betting Preview
The NFL is back with the Hall of Fame kicking off tonight between the Jets and Browns at 8pm ET. We shouldn’t see too many starting players in this game.
However we did see Josh Jacobs in last year’s game stay in for multiple series with the Raiders offense with Las Vegas coming away with a 27-11 win over the Jaguars covering as 2.5-point favorites and the total going over 30.5.
What can we expect in tonight’s Jets vs Browns Hall of Fame Game? We preview betting angles to look at heading in.
Predicting a Cleveland Browns Rushing Attack
Deshaun Watson should be held on the sideline in this game which leaves a combination of Joshua Dobbs, Kellen Mond and Dorian Thompson-Robinson to shoulder the load at QB tonight.
The rookie out of UCLA should see a bulk of the snaps in the second half as the other two QBs have at least stepped on an NFL field in recent history. Cedric Tillman and David Bell should be the primary receivers tonight as both compete for backup WR jobs heading into the 2023 season.
The backup RB job seems to be up in the air as both Jerome Ford and Demetric Felton Jr. both have very minimal NFL experience but both should use this opportunity to impress the Browns coaching staff.
We should see a heavy dose of rushing from the Browns as that’s what their offensive is built around with Nick Chubb still holding down the starting job. As always, more rushing leads to a running clock which will factor into our prediction.
New York Jets Betting Big On Whole New Bunch
Breece Hall’s status to begin the season is up in the air as Zonovan Knight and rookie Israel Abanikanda should see a bulk of the workload tonight.
The fifth round rookie out of Pitt will look to work his way up the depth chart but it’ll be tough to surpass Knight in time for the regular season.
Zach Wilson could start at QB but will should only play a series or two with Tim Boyle and Chris Streveler rounding out the QB room. Boyle is entering his fifth season but hasn’t shown he’s any sort of playmaker at quarterback.
He’ll be throwing to some inexperienced receivers in Irvin Charles, Xavier Gipson, Malik Taylor among others that don’t have much experience at all with Boyle and other Jets QBs.
The Jets offense will no doubt be built around the passing attack having acquired Aaron Rodgers this past offseason, but with how many changes happened this offseason up and down the depth chart we should see new offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett play it safe for the most part and rush the ball.
At the very least he can see what he’s got for the third-string running back job between Knight and Abanikanda.
Jets vs Browns Hall of Fame Game Prediction
There’s no doubt the trend for this game is to play on Unders as the average total score for this game over the past five years is 30.
With the total sitting at 33.5 as of this writing we’re going right back to that play as both teams should keep it on the ground for the most part inducing a running clock for the game.
The Jets are a completely new team so we could see some unforced miscues from them as they continue to learn Hackett’s offense on the field.
The Browns haven’t been a passing offense in recent memory and even though this is only the Hall of Fame Game, I expect them to deploy a heavy rushing attack and burn clock, even though starter Chubb should be on the sidelines.
Prediction: Under 33.5 Points -110
