Miami Dolphins vs Carolina Panthers Predictions

  • Miami Dolphins +2 vs Carolina Panthers
  • Total: 42 Points
  • The Panthers are 10-2 against the spread in their last 12 road games.
  • The under has cashed in each of Miami’s last four games.

The Dolphins entered their first game of November 1-7 and only a four-point favorite over a one-win Texans team. Keep that in mind if Christmas rolls around and Miami is collectively opening presents while dreaming of a 10-win season and a playoff spot.

While that sounds like a holiday miracle on the level of the Grinch’s heart growing three sizes that day, the fact it’s not an impossibility is borderline nuts. The NFL trade deadline came and went without a deal for Deshaun Watson being struck, and it’s not coincidental that Tua Tagovailoa has settled in and played some of his best football of the season in the weeks since that all transpired.

Getting healthier has definitely helped too, but not having to look over his shoulder for the next few months has led to improved play. Tagovailoa had two of his highest-rated games of the season over his past four weeks and completed 81.8 percent of his passes in helping take down the Jets in Week 11.

Miami has won three consecutive games and should be favored to double that run if it can pull off what would be considered a slight upset against the Panthers, who opened as a 1.5-to-2-point road favorite in South Florida. Carolina just lost a tight game against former head coach Ron Rivera and Washington on Sunday despite Cam Newton looking increasingly comfortable in his second stint with the Panthers.

Despite RB Christian McCaffrey returning and Newton stepping in for an ineffective PJ Walker after an inconsistent Sam Darnold was shelved due a shoulder injury that affected his play, Carolina lost at home for the second time this month against the WFT, dropping back below .500 and a half-game behind in the NFC playoff race.

Tagovailoa remains without his top receivers since DeVante Parker and Will Fuller IV, but both are eligible to come off IR. As of Wednesday morning, head coach Brian Flores said there’s nothing definitive established regarding their return but it sounds like both are close. Monitor that situation since having two proven performers at that position would provide a huge boost since Miami has been making due with rookie Jaylen Waddle, journeyman Mack Hollins and tight end Mike Gesicki as top receiving options.

The Dolphins’ defense has allowed 17 or fewer points in three straight weeks, which is also related to not making a move at the trade deadline since CB Xavien Howard was among the players who were thought to be on the block that stayed put. Miami pulled off one of the bigger upsets of the season in defeating a Ravens team that was in the mix in looking to trade for Howard on a Thursday night to open Week 10. Even its last loss, back on Oct. 31, was impressive.

The Dolphins were even in Buffalo deep into the third quarter, shutting down the Bills offense in the process. Their two losses prior to that one came on field goals in the final seconds, so they were knocking on the door of a breakthrough prior to November’s success.

Newton performed well last week in a start for the Panthers but ultimately fell 27-21 against Washington despite McCaffrey and DJ Moore both having productive games. Carolina has won its last two meetings with the Dolphins, winning 45-17 in Charlotte in 2017 and 20-16 in South Florida in their last visit way back in 2013. For context as to how long ago that was, Newton was just in his third season.

Although this looked like an ugly matchup a few weeks ago, circumstances have transformed it into a pretty attractive matchup. Look for Miami to take care of business against Carolina in continuing its rally and take the points before any news on Parker or Fuller hits since their inclusion would likely lead to this line moving closer to pick’em.

Miami Dolphins vs Carolina Panthers Analysis from The GoldSheet

The Dolphins’ next two games are also at home against the Giants and Jets, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that they can get to 7-7 and see where things stand entering a challenging final three weeks. Tua Tagovailoa has been far more productive of late, settling in now that he’s gotten healthier and the trade deadline has passed. They’re paying attention to their Dolphins in South Florida again, which can only help aid the cause given this key stretch that the team embarks upon at home. Look for Miami to take care of business against Carolina in continuing its rally.
