New England Patriots vs Indianapolis Colts Analysis

The Indianapolis Colts travel to Gillette Stadium to face the New England Patriots on Sunday afternoon. The Patriots improved to 4-4 on the season after beating the Jets 22-17 in New York. The Colts wound up losing 17-16 on a last-minute touchdown by the Washington Commanders and fell to 3-4-1 on the season.

Indianapolis prevailed 27-17 in the lone head-to-head meeting with New England during the 2021-22 campaign.

Colts’ Offense Lacks Weapons

Just two weeks after Jim Irsay publicly backed quarterback Matt Ryan, the Indianapolis Colts moved on and named Sam Ehlinger the starter for the remainder of the season. They also traded third-down back Nyheim Hines to the Buffalo Bills for a younger back in Zach Moss and a draft pick. Head coach Frank Reich also decided to part ways with offensive coordinator Marcus Ryan.

Last week, in his first ever NFL start, Sam Ehlinger went 17-for-23 for 201 yards in a 17-16 loss to the Washington Commanders. Johnathan Taylor ran for 76 yards on 16 carries, however he has already been ruled out for this contest. Newly-acquired Zach Moss may be limited as he adjusts to a new play book.

This offense is even more limited than they were last season under Carson Wentz as they currently rank 30th in scoring. Indianapolis is also 26th in red zone efficiency and 31st in turnovers. The defense has played well as they rank seventh in scoring defense, 16th against the run and eighth against the pass.

Pats Look To Move Past .500

Bill Belichick earned his 325th career win to move past George Halas on the NFL’s all-time win list with a 22-17 road win over the New York Jets. The New England Patriots went back to Mac Jones as their full-time quarterback and he went 24-of-35 for 194 yards with a touchdown and interception. Rhamondre Stevenson had another monster game with 16 carries for 71 yards while catching all seven of his targets for 72 yards. New England extended their dominant win streak over the Jets to 13 games.

The Patriots have displayed a classic “bend but don’t break” defense as they rank 12th in scoring defense but 22nd against the run and 19th against the run. Offensively they rank just 17th in scoring, 29th in red zone efficiency, 13th in rushing and 23rd in passing.

The offensive line will be thin as offensive tackle Marcus Cannon and center David Andrews have both already been ruled out along with wide receiver DeVante Parker. Running back Damien Harris remains questionable with an illness.

New England Patriots vs Indianapolis Colts Prediction

Bill Belichick has to be licking his chops as he faces his second-straight inexperienced quarterback. He has notoriously tormented young quarterbacks and Ehlinger is going be without his safety blanket in Johnathan Taylor. The Patriots had Zach Wilson “seeing ghosts” last week as he threw three interceptions while being sacked three times.

Belichick is also known for focusing on shutting down the oppositions greatest weapon, without Taylor in the picture it seems like that will be Michael Pittman Jr. The Colts offense has only managed to score 26 points over the last two weeks against weak defensive teams in the Tennessee Titans and Washington Commanders.

The Indianapolis team total is set at 16.5 points with even-money odds on the under. The Pats only allow 20 points a game and have held three of their last four opponents to 17 points or less. Outside of a big play on defense or special teams, I don’t see the Colts offense enough to clear this team total.

Prediction: Indianapolis Colts Team Total UNDER 16.5 (+100 at DraftKings)
