History of the New York Giants

 The History of the New York Giants: A Legacy of Glory and Struggle 

The New York Giants are one of the oldest and most successful franchises in the National Football League (NFL). Founded in 1925, they have won eight NFL championships, four of them in the Super Bowl era. They have also produced some of the greatest players and coaches in the history of the sport, such as Frank Gifford, Lawrence Taylor, Bill Parcells, Eli Manning and Tom Coughlin. However, the Giants have also faced many challenges and hardships throughout their long and storied history, such as financial difficulties, relocation threats, losing streaks and controversies. This article will explore the history of the New York Giants, from their humble beginnings to their present-day glory. 

The Early Years: 1925-1955 

The New York Giants were founded in 1925 by Tim Mara, a bookmaker and businessman who bought the franchise for $500. Mara named the team after the baseball Giants, who were then the dominant sports team in New York City. The Giants joined the NFL as an expansion team and played their home games at the Polo Grounds. 

The Giants quickly established themselves as a competitive and popular team in the league. In their first season, they finished with an 8-4 record and attracted an average of over 20,000 fans per game. They also signed some of the best players in the league, such as Jim Thorpe, Benny Friedman and Red Grange. In 1927, they won their first NFL championship by defeating the Chicago Bears 13-7 in the final game of the season. 

The Giants continued to be one of the elite teams in the NFL throughout the 1930s and 1940s. They won three more NFL championships in 1934, 1938 and 1956. The Giants also had some of the most talented and influential players and coaches in this era. Some of them include Mel Hein, Tuffy Leemans, Ken Strong, Steve Owen, Charlie Conerly, Frank Gifford, Sam Huff and Vince Lombardi. 

The Lean Years: 1956-1980 

The New York Giants entered a period of decline after winning their fourth NFL championship in 1956. They failed to win another title for over two decades, despite reaching the NFL championship game five times between 1958 and 1963. They also struggled to find a consistent quarterback after Conerly retired in 1961. They tried several options, such as Y.A. Tittle, Earl Morrall, Fran Tarkenton and Norm Snead, but none of them could lead the team to glory. 

The Giants also faced financial difficulties and relocation threats in this era. They moved out of the Polo Grounds in 1956 and shared Yankee Stadium with the baseball Yankees until 1973. They then moved to New Jersey and played at Giants Stadium until 2009. They also had to compete with other teams for fans and media attention in New York City, such as the Jets, who joined the AFL in 1960 and won Super Bowl III in 1969; and the Mets, who joined MLB in 1962 and won the World Series in 1969. 

The Giants also had some controversies and scandals in this era. One of them was the “Spygate” incident in 1978, when a Giants assistant coach was caught using a walkie-talkie to communicate with players on the field during a game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles won that game on a last-second fumble return touchdown by Herman Edwards, which became known as “The Miracle at the Meadowlands”. Another controversy was the “Fumble” incident in 1979, when quarterback Joe Pisarcik botched a handoff to Larry Csonka on a late-game play against the Eagles and fumbled again. The Eagles recovered and scored another touchdown to win. 

The Giants also had some bright spots in this era. They drafted some future Hall of Famers such as Harry Carson, Phil Simms and Lawrence Taylor. They also hired George Young as their general manager in 1979. Young turned around the fortunes of the franchise by making smart personnel decisions and hiring Bill Parcells as head coach in 1983. 

The Glory Years: 1981-1990 

The New York Giants returned to prominence in the 1980s under the leadership of Young, Parcells and Simms. They won their first Super Bowl in 1986, when they defeated the Denver Broncos 39-20 in Super Bowl XXI. Simms was named the MVP of the game after completing 22 of 25 passes for 268 yards and three touchdowns. Taylor was also a dominant force on defense, winning the NFL MVP award in 1986. 

The Giants won their second Super Bowl in 1990, when they defeated the Buffalo Bills 20-19 in Super Bowl XXV. They did so without Simms, who was injured in the regular season and replaced by Jeff Hostetler. The Giants relied on their defense, led by Taylor, Carson and Carl Banks, and their running game, led by Ottis Anderson, who was named the MVP of the game. The Giants also executed a game-winning field goal by Matt Bahr as time expired, after Scott Norwood missed a potential game-winning field goal for the Bills. 

The Giants also had some memorable games and moments in this era. One of them was the “Monday Night Miracle” in 1986, when they came back from a 17-0 deficit to beat the San Francisco 49ers 21-17 on a touchdown pass from Simms to Bobby Johnson with six seconds left. Another one was the “Wide Right” game in 1990, when Norwood missed his field goal attempt in Super Bowl XXV. 

The Giants also had some of the best players and coaches in this era. Some of them include Mark Bavaro, Joe Morris, Leonard Marshall, Jim Burt, Sean Landeta, Raul Allegre, Bill Belichick and Tom Coughlin. 

The Struggle Years: 1991-2003 

The New York Giants entered another period of decline after winning their second Super Bowl in 1990. They failed to win another title for over a decade, despite reaching the playoffs six times between 1993 and 2002. They also struggled to find a consistent head coach after Parcells retired in 1991. They tried several options, such as Ray Handley, Dan Reeves, Jim Fassel and Coughlin, but none of them could lead the team to glory. 

The Giants also faced some challenges and disappointments in this era. They moved out of Giants Stadium in 2009 and shared MetLife Stadium with the Jets until present. They also had to compete with other teams for fans and media attention in New York City, such as the Yankees, who won four World Series between 1996 and 2000; and the Nets, who reached the NBA Finals twice in 2002 and 2003. 

The Giants also had some controversies and scandals in this era. One of them was the “Handshake” incident in 1997, when Reeves refused to shake hands with Parcells after a game against the New England Patriots. Parcells was then coaching the Patriots and had left the Giants on bad terms. Another controversy was the “Helmet Catch” incident in 2008, when David Tyree made a miraculous catch against his helmet on a pass from Eli Manning on a crucial third-and-long play against the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. The Giants went on to win that game and spoil the Patriots’ perfect season. 

The Giants also had some bright spots in this era. They drafted some future stars such as Michael Strahan, Tiki Barber, Amani Toomer, Jeremy Shockey and Manning. They also reached their third Super Bowl in 2000, when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings 41-0 in the NFC Championship Game. However, they lost to the Baltimore Ravens 34-7 in Super Bowl XXXV. 

The Recent Years: 2004-Present 

The New York Giants returned to glory in the late 2000s under the leadership of Coughlin and Manning. They won their third Super Bowl in 2007, when they defeated the Patriots 17-14 in Super Bowl XLII. Manning was named the MVP of the game after leading a game-winning drive that included Tyree’s catch. Strahan was also a key player on defense, leading the league in sacks with 22.5. 

The Giants won their fourth Super Bowl in 2011, when they defeated the Patriots again 21-17 in Super Bowl XLVI. Manning was named the MVP of the game again after leading another game-winning drive that included a spectacular catch by Mario Manningham. Victor Cruz was also a breakout star on offense, setting a franchise record with 1,536 receiving yards. 

The Giants have not reached another Super Bowl since then, despite making the playoffs twice in 2016 and 2020. They have also faced some challenges and disappointments in this era. They have had several losing seasons and coaching changes since Coughlin retired in 2015. They have also had some controversies and scandals in this era. One of them was the “Boat Trip” incident in 2017, when several players, including Odell Beckham Jr., went on a boat trip in Miami before a playoff game against the Green Bay Packers. The Giants lost that game 38-13 and Beckham had several drops. Another controversy was the “Benching” incident in 2017, when then-coach Ben McAdoo benched Manning for Geno Smith, ending Manning’s streak of 210 consecutive starts. The Giants lost that game 24-17 to the Oakland Raiders and McAdoo was fired soon after.
