New York Jets History

The New York Jets: A History of Triumph and Tragedy

The New York Jets are one of the most storied franchises in NFL history. They have won one Super Bowl, in 1969, and they have made the playoffs 14 times. However, the Jets have also had their share of heartbreak, including two Super Bowl losses and a number of close playoff defeats.

In this article, we will take a look at the history of the New York Jets. We will discuss the team’s early years, the Joe Namath era, the Bill Parcells era, the Rex Ryan era, and the present day.

Keywords: New York Jets, NFL, history, Joe Namath, Bill Parcells, Rex Ryan, Super Bowl, championships, dynasty, future, heartbreak, hope

The Early Years of the Jets

The New York Jets were founded in 1960 as an expansion team. The team’s first home was Shea Stadium in Flushing, Queens. The Jets’ first head coach was Weeb Ewbank.

The Jets’ early years were a bit rocky. They had some winning seasons, but they also had their share of losing seasons. They did not make the playoffs until their third season, in 1963.

In 1965, the Jets drafted quarterback Joe Namath, who would go on to become one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. Namath led the Jets to their first playoff appearance in 1968.

The Joe Namath Era

The Jets’ fortunes changed in 1968, when they signed Namath to a record-breaking contract. Namath was a flamboyant personality, and he quickly became a national celebrity.

The Jets made the playoffs in 1968, and they upset the heavily favored Baltimore Colts in the Super Bowl. The Jets’ victory was one of the biggest upsets in NFL history, and it made Namath a legend.

The Bill Parcells Era

The Jets’ fortunes declined in the 1970s, and they did not make the playoffs again until 1982. In 1997, the Jets hired Bill Parcells as head coach. Parcells was a successful coach, and he led the Jets to the playoffs four times in his six seasons with the team.

The Rex Ryan Era

The Jets hired Rex Ryan as head coach in 2009. Ryan was a defensive-minded coach, and he quickly turned the Jets’ defense into one of the best in the NFL.

The Jets made the playoffs in Ryan’s first two seasons with the team, and they reached the AFC Championship Game in 2010. However, the Jets’ fortunes declined in Ryan’s later years, and he was fired in 2014.

The Present Day

The Jets have been a rebuilding team in recent years. They have not made the playoffs since 2010, and they have had a number of high-profile draft busts.

The Jets are currently led by quarterback Zach Wilson, who was drafted second overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. Wilson is a talented quarterback, and he is hoping to lead the Jets back to the playoffs in the near future.

The Future of the Jets

The Jets are a team with a rich history and a bright future. The team has a passionate fan base, and they play their home games at MetLife Stadium, one of the most modern stadiums in the NFL.

The Jets are sure to be a contender for many years to come.

The Curse of the Jets

The Jets have been cursed with a number of heartbreaking playoff losses throughout their history. In 1969, the Jets lost the Super Bowl to the Baltimore Colts on a last-second field goal. In 1986, the Jets lost the AFC Championship Game to the New England Patriots on a field goal with no time left on the clock. In 2010, the Jets lost the AFC Championship Game to the Pittsburgh Steelers on a last-second touchdown pass.

The Jets’ playoff losses have led to a belief that the team is cursed. However, the Jets have also had their share of success, and they are sure to be a contender for many years to come.
