NFL Regular Season Coach Of The Year Trends

•Only one coach won the award despite his team finishing below .500 in the standings that season (Jimmy Johnson in 1990).

•There have been 13 multiple winners of the Coach of the Year award, with three coaches (Don Shula, Chuck Knox, Bill Belichick) winning 3+ times.

•There has not been a back-to-back Coach of the Year winner since 1982 and 1983 (Joe Gibbs).

2024-25 NFL Coach Of The Year Predictions

The NFL Coach of the Year odds clearly show that predicting one is very difficult as it doesn’t go to the team with the best record or even who the NFL perceives to be the best coach.

Instead, the award generally goes to a coach whose team outperformed expectations or overcame multiple injuries.

The New York Jets Robert Saleh doesn’t necessarily fit that bill, but he still has the 3rd best odds to win the award. In 2023, the Jets remained competitive and won seven games despite losing Aaron Rodgers in Week 1.

Now Rodgers is back, and New York added veterans Mike Williams and Tyron Smith to sure up the offense.

They should be significantly better in scoring, and they enter the season with a top five team defense according to PFF. The Jets have a solid shot at winning the AFC East and if that does happen, Saleh will be in the running for the Coach of the Year.

2024-25 NFL Coach Of The Year Longshot Prediction

Sleepers take home this award at an alarming rate, so longshots often offer great value. We have seen a coach with preseason odds of 20-1 or better win the award in 6 of the last 8 seasons including a 50-1 in Sean McVay back in 2017.

The most wide open division in the NFL is the NFC South so it would make sense to look there for a real longshot.

The New Orleans Saints have easiest strength of schedule in the entire NFL with their opponents 2023 winning percentage sitting at .453. Obviously, part that is due to their division schedule, but they also have the 2nd highest rated defense in South behind Tampa Bay.

The offense does have weapons in Alvin Kamara & Chris Olave and Derek Carr could also improve with a full season in the organization under his belt.

The Saints have a 12-22 over/under record under Dennis Allen, so the potential is there for them to steal a few low scoring games. It’s going to be an uphill battle but if New Orleans wins their division, then Allen will have a legitimate chance and what do you want for 65-1?
