•Since the award returned in 1998, we have seen 17 quarterbacks, three wide receivers, five defensive players, one running back and one tight end win the award.

•A quarterback has won the award in each of the past six seasons.

•No defensive player has won the award since Eric Berry in 2015.

•The award was shared when Tedy Bruschi and Steve Smith Sr. were both named NFL CPOY back in 2005.

The CPOY award goes to whichever player provides the most compelling story, it could the return from an injury or an outstanding individual season after struggles on or off the field.

Joe Burrow is regarded as a top five quarterback in the NFL when healthy but unfortunately that’s been his biggest issue.

Burrow has suffered season ending injuries in two of his four NFL seasons and he’s coming off a torn UCL. When on the field, Burrow has been elite including his 2021 season that already won him Comeback Player of the Year where he threw for 4,611 yards, 34 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

The Cincinnati Bengals are currently ranked 5th (+1300) in terms of favorites to win the Super Bowl this coming season and 3rd in the AFC behind only Kansas City and Baltimore.

If the Bengals win or make the Super Bowl, Burrow will have the edge over the odds-on-favorite Aaron Rodgers to become the only the second player in NFL history with two CPOY awards (Chad Pennington).

We mentioned a compelling story based on an outstanding individual season after struggles on or off the field and Kyler Murray’s reported attitude problem fits that mold.

The Arizona Cardinals management and coaching staff have fully supported Murray and he’s shown maturity in connecting with teammates and adapting to a new offense under coordinator Drew Petzing.

During training camp, Murray has spread the ball around to newly acquired deep threat Marvin Harrison Jr, safety blanket Trey Mcbride and wide outs Michael Wilson and Greg Dortch. Petzing also hinted at more designed quarterback runs which could give Murray an extra edge.

The Cardinals are obviously a longshot to make the postseason but if they even sniff the playoffs and Murray returns to 2020 form than he would have a strong case for the award at an amazing 30-1 price.
