NFL Regular Season Defensive Rookie Of The Year Trends

The Defensive Rookie of the Year is far more evenly dispersed to positions compared to the offensive counterpart.

Houston Texans defensive end Will Anderson Jr won the Defensive ROTY last season after recording 45 tackles, seven sacks (4th most among rookies) and 22 QB hits (most among rookies).

Sauce Gardner brought home the award in the 2022 campaign for the Jets and became the third corner in the past nine seasons to win.

Linebackers have taken the award home 13 times since 2000 and four have made the top ten list. Defensive ends and linemen have been successful recently as they have won the award six times since 2013.

Sometimes a favorite is there for a reason and that seems to be case with Dallas Turner as he will be a pivotal piece of the Minnesota Vikings defense.

We cashed on Will Anderson Jr last season with the exact same price tag of +350. However, I really like the value of Chop Robinson (cool name too) so we will recommend splitting your bet equally between the two players listed below.

Dallas Turner is coming off a season where he racked up 11 sacks, 11 quarterback hits and 55 total pressures on 292 pass rushing snaps while earning a career high 89.3 PFF pass-rush grade.

Turner turned heads at the NFL scouting combine and he’s going to be on a strong rotation with free agent acquisitions Andrew Van Ginkel and Johnathan Greenard.

The Vikings will need strong defensive efforts to compete on a week-to-week basis and Turner has the exact feel of Anderson Jr pick last season.

2024-25 NFL Defensive Rookie Of The Year Longshot Prediction

Since 2002, 21 of the 22 Defensive ROTY winners have been first-round picks with Shaquille Leonard (picked #36 overall by Indianapolis) being the only player to break the mold.

Chop Robinson was the Miami Dolphins 21st pick this season, meaning he’s fully expected to be a major part of the organization’s future.

The Dolphins top two edge rushers, Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips both suffered significant injuries during the second half of the NFL season in 2023 which will likely keep them out of training camp and at the very least limit their production early in the season.

Robinson will likely be forced to play out of necessity and that will give him the opportunity to stack the necessary statistics to win the award.
