NFL Week 14 Betting Preview

How will weather impact the NFL Week 14 betting slate? Surprisingly, not much. Considering we have mid-December games in Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Denver this weekend, weather shouldn’t have a huge impact on this weekend’s card. Sportsmemo NFL handicapper Eric Pauly takes a deeper look.

NFL Week 14 Analysis

Looking at the weather across the NFL this week, there does not seem to be any matchup where horrible weather will be a factor. However, there are still a few games to monitor. Let’s take a look at how the weather may or may not affect some NFL matchups in Week 14.

Kansas City Chiefs at Denver Broncos
Stadium: Mile High Stadium in Denver, CO

This game doesn’t make the list because of bad weather. It makes the list because of how nice it will be.  Mile High Stadium in Denver is known as one of the toughest places to play in the NFL for a few reasons, mainly the elevation and weather.

When the Chiefs saw a mid-December trip to Denver on their schedule, they probably assumed miserable conditions would be on tap. Quite the contrary, and that’s probably not good for the home team.

The Chiefs come into this game as 9.5-point road favorites. Kansas City boasts the highest-scoring offense in the NFL, and they accumulate the most yards per game as well.

If the rain, sleet and snow that Denver residents are used to was in this week’s forecast,  it would be safe to assume that Kansas City would need to run the ball more, which is something they struggle with. However, given the expected lack of impact from the weather this weekend, the Broncos will have a tough time slowing down this deadly Cheifs’ passing attack.

New York Jets at Buffalo Bills
Stadium: Highmark Stadium in Buffalo, NY

Weather can be a huge factor in football games in western New York in December. However, this game will not be one of them. We saw Buffalo needed to move their Week 11 game due to a terrible snowstorm, but Buffalo will have better conditions on Sunday.

Normally the Bills’ stadium has some of the most ferocious winds of any NFL stadium, but that will not be the case this week, even if there is some precipitation.

This lack of impactful weather benefits the Jets’ offense but does not help its defense. Mike White threw 57 times in a dome last week, and I do not expect the same passing volume. Josh Allen has a strong enough arm to cut through 20 mile per hour winds, so 11 MPH winds will not be a factor.

Even though there may be some snow, it will not be enough to alter either of these teams’ game plans seriously. The Jets may run the ball more, but that is not too abnormal for them. All in all, Buffalo still has the advantage in this game, but the weather will not play a major factor.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at San Francisco 49ers
Stadium: Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, CA

It looks like there will be rain and wind in this matchup, and these conditions are not great for either offense. It does not get too cold in Santa Clara, so rain and wind are the predominant weather conditions that affect the 49ers’ home games. Based on the weather report, it seems like this will be the case in this NFC showdown on Sunday.

The rain and wind can greatly affect the kicking game in this matchup. A wet ball will make it harder for the holder, and the winds will make it tough for each kicker.

On offense, the 49ers are at a slight disadvantage since a lot of their offense is about short catches and yards after the catch. If the wind and rain are both coming down hard, it is fair to assume the 49ers will have a harder time moving the ball.

For the Buccaneers, it is also a disadvantage. The Buccaneers have a weak ground game, so they will look to throw the ball more. If the rain and wind are coming down, it will be hard for Brady to move the ball down the field, and a slippery ball is tough for receivers to hold on to.
