NFL Week 16 Analysis
New Orleans Saints at Cleveland Browns
Stadium: First Energy Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio
First Energy Stadium is on top of Lake Erie, so when the weather is bad in Cleveland, it is worse at the stadium. This matchup is supposed to feature the worst weather of any NFL game so far this season. It is supposed to be around five degrees with wind gusts well over 20 miles per hour and some snow to cap it all off.
The total in this game reflects this, as it sits at a measly 32.5 points. The Browns are slight home favorites since they are playing a team whose home stadium is a dome. Due to the weather, it is fair to expect barely any passing attempts and even fewer field goals – including a drop in extra point attempts.
The best way to bet this game would be to bet the under in passing and receiving yards for most players as well as the under in field goal attempts. In games like this, it is also difficult to win by margin, so teasing up the Saints from +3 to +9 could have value. Most of the props and the total already have the wind priced in, so live betting this game as the weather gets worse throughout the game could also be a betting angle.
Buffalo Bills at Chicago Bears
Stadium: Solider Field in Chicago, Illinois
The wind is supposed to be over 20 miles per hour at Solider Field on Saturday. The Bears are a dead-over team, yet the total has trickled down from the opener. With an offense as good as the Bills’ and defense as bad as the Bears’, that is a dead indicator of how bad the conditions will be on Saturday.
This game benefits the Bears more so than the Bills. Buffalo could not stop the run last week, and the Bears run the ball more than any other team. Justin Fields is already limited as a passer, so when you mix in the elements, you can certainly assume passing a lot will not be in Chicago’s game script.
As for Buffalo, Josh Allen has one of the strongest arms in the NFL, but Mother Nature is undefeated. Expect a run-heavy game script from the Bills as well in a game where the weather is a major factor. I’d look at under the total here as well at some pregame and live unders as the weather gets worse throughout the game.
Las Vegas Raiders at Pittsburgh Steelers
Stadium: Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
This primetime matchup on Saturday may also be affected deeply by weather conditions. The gusts of wind could reach 20+ miles per hour, and it will be below freezing on the river. This should affect the visitors more than the home team.
The Raiders play in Vegas and do not have to deal with the weather too often. Carr has been poor in cold weather throughout his career, and the weather in Pittsburgh should be bad enough to affect him. However, Las Vegas has a strong ground game to combat this.
The Steelers are used to this, but rookie QB Kenny Pickett may not be. The best way to bet on this game would be to tease up the Raiders. In a game with teams so evenly matched and weather that will make it hard to win by margin, taking a team +8.5 points is the best way to approach this.
