Seattle Seahawks vs Chicago Bears Predictions
The Seahawks won’t win nine games for the first time since Russell Wilson took over in 2012, so it will be interesting to see how motivated they are playing for a second time in the same week after a demoralizing loss to the Rams in a game that appeared winnable if they could’ve generated an offensive spark.
Wilson was picked off late, failed to throw a touchdown pass and completed just 17 of 31 passes for 156 yards in L.A., clearly missing the presence of Tyler Lockett. DK Metcalf had a number of chances to make plays but Wilson missed him, which tells you that the perennial MVP candidate has definitely struggled in an injury-plagued year.
Snow is in the forecast for this matchup with the Bears, who will start Nick Foles instead of Justin Fields, who is nursing an ankle injury. The rookie isn’t expected to risk aggravating the issue, so Foles will likely see his most significant action since a Monday night start in late November of 2020 in which he threw for barely 100 yards in a loss to Minnesota. Foles has lost the last four games in which he saw significant time, so a Seattle defense that has fared well in holding six of its last eight opponents to 20 or fewer points.
Lockett was hoping to come back for the team’s Tuesday night game against the Rams and is going to make it back for this game since he’s been asymptomatic, so Seattle should have a full complement of weapons in place as it looks to handle business at home. Unfortunately, a victory no longer means that they’ll have life heading into Week 17, so the 12th Man won’t be able to aid a playoff push.
One of the top homefield advantages in the NFL has been unable to sway results, witnessing four losses in the Seahawks’ first five outings this season. That’s one reason why the team finds itself in the predicament they’re in. Home games against these Bears and the Lions will be games they’ll be expected to win and Seattle is getting healthier at the right time, but it remains to be seen how motivated this group is at it attempts to handle business against the sloppy Bears.
Seahawks LB Bobby Wagner has already expressed his displeasure with the NFL for forcing his team to playing on a Sunday after working on Tuesday. Pete Carroll could very well play younger players on the roster and spread out reps since his team has realistically been eliminated from playoff contention although it’s still not mathematically impossible for them to finish seventh. Chicago is eliminated and comes in 4-10, but its defense does have Akiem Hicks and Robert Quinn terrorizing opponents even with Khalil Mack out and the starting secondary all afflicted with COVID. The Bears deserved better in their Monday night loss to Minnesota after knocking around Kirk Cousins and shutting down the Vikings’ attack.
The Seahawks have scored 15 or fewer points in four of the last six games and have struggled to overcome absences at running back and on the offensive line, so with Wilson likely to be pressed for time to throw again and working against a Chicago secondary that’s closer to full strength, it’s hard to recommend laying points. Hicks is hoping to clear protocols in time to play and would certainly help the ‘under’ cause if he’s out there making life difficult for the Seattle offensive line. Mother Nature is also expected to lend an assist since snow could be in the forecast following a cold and rainy holiday weekend. Ride the low side on 42 points.
