Seattle Seahawks vs San Francisco 49ers Predictions

  • San Francisco 49ers -3.5 at Seattle Seahawks
  • Total: 45.5 Points
  • The under is 8-0-1 in Seattle’s last nine games.
  • Seattle has won 16 of the last 19 meetings in this series.
  • San Francisco is 16-6 in its last 22 road games.

The 6-5 San Francisco 49ers will meet the 3-8 Seahawks at Lumen Field in Seattle for a divisional battle on Sunday afternoon. The 49ers will look to build on a 3rd straight victory after they prevailed in a 34-26 shootout against Minnesota. The Seahawks will be looking to bounce back after losing 17-15 to Washington on Monday night. Seattle beat the 49ers 28-21 Week 4 in San Francisco. However Jimmy Garoppolo left that game at halftime with a calf injury and Russell Wilson was 100% healthy.

They are 3-8, so the season is all but over for the Seattle Seahawks and that’s just scratching the surface of this teams issues. First off, it seems like Russell Wilson was brought back too quickly from his finger injury. He just doesn’t look 100%, as he’s frequently botched routine throws. Of course it doesn’t help that Seattle simply cannot run the ball. Alex Collins is now their lead back and he hasn’t run for over 50 yards in 5 weeks, including a 7 carry 14 yard performance against Washington on Monday night. The Seahawk offense basically boils down to whatever yardage they can muster up on deep bombs to D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. Their defense has been a bend but don’t break.

They have allowed the most yards per game in the league, while also only allowing 20.5 points a game good for 7th best. The Seahawks defensive weakness is against the pass as they allow 274 yards a game which is 2nd most in the NFL. The Seahawks will be at home with the 12th man, however they are only 1-4 at home this season and will also be on a short week after playing on Monday night.

The 49ers have won three straight games to build their record to 6-5 and a now look to the 2nd half of the season to make a playoff run. While Seattle will be dealing with bumps and bruises after a short turnaround, San Francisco has injury concerns of their own. On defense the Niners are extremely thin at linebacker as Dre Greenlaw is questionable, Fred Warner is doubtful and Marcell Harris is in concussion protocol.

While San Francisco is middle of the road against the run, a weakened front seven could finally give Seattle some traction with their running game. Injuries have also plagued the 49ers offense recently as it looks like Swiss Army Knife wide receiver Deebo Samuel will miss Week 13. Samuel has been vital to San Francisco’s success over the past three weeks where he’s been primarily used as a rusher. Deebo has run for 181 yards on 19 carries with four touchdowns on the ground during that span. He’s helped San Francisco control time of possession and made it so they didn’t have to rely completely on Elijah Mitchell to run the ball.

The 49ers could also be without running backs Trey Sermon and JaMycal Hasty who are both questionable this week. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo still has weapons like tight end George Kittle and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has really come alive over the past month or so. Head coach Kyle Shanahan loves to run the ball and that’s the strength of the Seahawks defense, so it will be interesting to see what he comes up with being so short handed.

Both teams are 5-6 against the spread overall while Seattle is 2-3 ATS at home and San Francisco is 3-2 ATS on the road. The Seahawks have more ATS unders than any team in the league at 1-9-1 while the 49ers are 6-5 over/under ATS. San Francisco is favored by 3.5 with the total set at 46. The 49ers are in the midst of a playoff run while Pete Carroll and the Seahawks can’t find a way to put the ball into the end zone.

I get the allure of Seattle catching the points at home but this Seattle team is a disaster right now. Regardless of the 49ers injury concerns, I just don’t like what I’ve seen from Seattle on either side of the ball in recent weeks. We will be rolling with the red & gold and laying the 3.5 points with the 49ers this Sunday. Feel free to buy the hook at a reasonable price and make it 3 if that makes you more comfortable.

Either way I just don’t see Seattle putting up many points against any NFL defense at this point. Which brings us to our second play, Seahawks team total under 20.5 points. Like I mentioned earlier, the Seattle offense has been stagnant with a shaky Russell Wilson and a non-existent ground game. You simply cannot rely completely on the deep ball. I also fully expect the Niners focus to be on controlling the clock with the ground game, regardless of who is on the field.

Official Play #1: San Francisco 49ers -3.5
Official Play #2: Seahawks Team Total UNDER 20.5

Seattle Seahawks vs San Francisco 49ers Analysis from The GoldSheet

San Francisco seems to have hit a patch of better form, winning three straight after taking care of business at home against Minnesota, and the Niners have also given up just 16 ppg over the past seven, recalling some of the Super Bowl-season form of two years ago. QB Jimmy Garoppolo has also been completing 69% of his passes for 247 yards per game with a 7-2 TD-int. ratio over the past five games. Moreover, San Francisco has won 16 of its last 22 road games straight-up and are 6-2 their last eight as road chalk, suggesting they might be able to handle laying this short price.

The “under” looms as a viable option as well, with Seattle on a 8-0-1 “under” run, while the Niners have been “under” in three of their last four road games. First meeting this season was Seattle’s 16th win in 19 games against San Francisco, but these are different teams than in past seasons, and it was rookie Trey Lance in the lineup for the second half after Garoppolo went down with a calf injury in the first meeting.
