Tampa Bay Bucs vs Buffalo Bills Predictions

  • Tampa Bay Bucs -3.5 vs Buffalo Bills
  • Total: 53.5 Points
  • Tampa Bay has won its last nine home games, covering the spread in eight of them.

There are a number of attractive games going off in the NFL on Sunday and the Monday night matchup between the Rams and Cardinals is most definitely a banger, but Week 14’s most intriguing affair features the Bills and Bucs squaring off in sunny Tampa.

While a rainy weekend featuring wind gusts approaching 40 miles per hour is in store for Buffalo residents, the city’s football team will go play in 80-degree weather. There’s a threat of rain in Central Florida too, but that’s always the case. If nothing else, the Bills can be elated that they won’t have to overcome Mother Nature in addition to an opposing defense, as was the case in Monday’s frustrating 14-10 loss to New England.

Buffalo comes out of Monday night’s bitter, windswept setback and immediately gets another huge test against Tom Brady and the defending champs. This may still end up being the potential Super Bowl preview it was expected to be a few weeks back if one of the AFC’s most talented teams finds a way to right the ship, but as it stands now, it’s simply an opportunity for the current No. 7 seed in the conference to avoid dropping out of the playoff picture altogether.

Cleveland, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Denver, Pittsburgh and Miami are all within striking distance, just one back in the win column. The Bills have lost their grip on the lead in AFC East and have struggled mightily on offense of late, scoring 15 or fewer points in three of their last five contests. Buffalo lost to a Patriots team that attempted only three passes thanks to miscues in the red zone, which included a crucial Tyler Bass missed field goal midway through the fourth quarter that changed the dynamic Monday night’s loss.

They’ll see the Pats again in Foxborough the day after Christmas so there’s no dwelling on missed opportunities. In that regard, being forced to refocus in order to deal with the challenges that come into play in facing Tampa Bay should help the team move on quickly. This matchup affords Buffalo an opportunity to win a third consecutive road game and improve to 5-2 outside upstate New York since they’ve handled business against the Jets (45-17) and Saints (31-6) after a puzzling 9-6 loss in Jacksonville.

Although they won’t have to deal with the suspended Antonio Brown, the pass defense will have to contend with Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, who combined for 24 catches and 242 yards for Brady last Sunday against the Falcons. They’ll need to hang without top corner Tre’Davious White, whose torn ACL suffered in Week 12 really threw a wrench into the team’s title aspirations. Because the Patriots passed on passing the ball amid 50-degree wind gusts, we still haven’t had an opportunity to see how the Bills secondary will respond to losing their most talented player.

Figuring out how they can manage to contain one of the NFL’s most prolific passing attacks on the road will be a great test for Buffalo, which does have a chance to finish strong considering it has three home games remaining against the Panthers, Falcons and Jets in addition to that Dec. 26 trip to New England that may ultimately decide the AFC East.

Brady is coming off a four-touchdown pass effort that gives him a single-season personal best with six and extended his NFL record to 39 for his career. His Bucs have a four-game lead in the NFC South and could clinch a division title with a win here and a New Orleans loss to the Jets. Tampa Bay is looking for its fourth consecutive win and has scored 30 or more points in three straight games, its longest such streak of the season. The Bucs scored 30 or more in the final three games of the 2020 regular season before doing so in every playoff game during their Super Bowl run, which featured 31 points in three of their four wins. Even without preferred receiver Brown in place, Brady has the offense humming and connected with Chris Godwin 15 times in last Sunday’s victory over Atlanta.

Allen will have to be at his best to challenge a Bucs defense that’s back at full strength in order to keep pace with Brady. He’s helped produce over 30 points in five of Buffalo’s six road games, with only that brutal loss to the Jaguars serving as an outlier. He should fare better in the Sunshine State this time around, helping produce a high-scoring affair that will deliver more than the posted total of 53-54 points.
