Tennessee Titans History

The History of the Tennessee Titans: A Tale of Two Cities and One Team 

The Tennessee Titans are one of the most unique and resilient franchises in the National Football League (NFL). Founded in 1960, they have played in two different cities and under three different names. They have also won two AFL championships and one AFC championship. They have also produced some of the greatest players and coaches in the history of the sport, such as George Blanda, Earl Campbell, Warren Moon, Bruce Matthews, Steve McNair and Jeff Fisher. However, the Titans have also faced many challenges and hardships throughout their long and storied history, such as relocation threats, losing seasons and controversies. This article will explore the history of the Tennessee Titans, from their origins in Houston to their present-day success in Nashville. 

The Houston Years: 1960-1996 

The Tennessee Titans were founded in 1960 as the Houston Oilers by Bud Adams, a businessman and oil tycoon. Adams was one of the original owners of the American Football League (AFL), a rival league to the NFL. The Oilers joined the AFL as one of its charter members and played their home games at Jeppesen Stadium. 

The Oilers quickly established themselves as one of the dominant teams in the AFL. They won the first two AFL championships in 1960 and 1961, led by quarterback George Blanda and running back Billy Cannon. They also reached the AFL championship game in 1962 and 1967, but lost to the Dallas Texans and the Oakland Raiders respectively. 

The Oilers continued to be one of the elite teams in the AFL throughout the 1960s and early 1970s. They drafted some future Hall of Famers such as Elvin Bethea, Ken Houston and Earl Campbell. They also moved to a new stadium, the Astrodome, in 1968. They also joined the NFL in 1970 as part of the AFL-NFL merger. 

The Oilers reached their peak of success in the late 1970s under the leadership of coach Bum Phillips and running back Earl Campbell. They won two consecutive AFC Central titles in 1978 and 1979. They also reached the AFC Championship Game twice, but lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers both times. 

The Oilers entered a period of decline after their last division title in 1979. They failed to make the playoffs for six consecutive seasons between 1980 and 1985. They also struggled to find a consistent quarterback after Dan Pastorini left in 1980. They tried several options such as Gifford Nielsen, Archie Manning and Oliver Luck, but none of them could lead the team to glory. 

The Oilers returned to prominence in the late 1980s under the leadership of coach Jerry Glanville and quarterback Warren Moon. They won four consecutive AFC Central titles between 1987 and 1991. They also had one of the most explosive offenses in NFL history, known as the “Run and Shoot”, which featured Moon and receivers such as Ernest Givins, Haywood Jeffires and Drew Hill. 

The Oilers also had some memorable games and moments in this era. One of them was the “Comeback” game in 1993, when they blew a 35-3 lead against the Buffalo Bills in a wild-card playoff game and lost 41-38 in overtime. Another one was the “House of Pain” game in 1991, when they beat the Cincinnati Bengals 35-3 at Riverfront Stadium, which was nicknamed “The House of Pain” by Bengals coach Sam Wyche. 

The Oilers also faced some challenges and disappointments in this era. They moved out of the Astrodome in 1996 and played at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium until 1997. They also had to compete with other teams for fans and media attention in Houston, such as the Rockets, who won two NBA championships in 1994 and 1995; and the Astros, who reached the MLB playoffs six times between 1986 and 1999. 

The Oilers also had some controversies and scandals in this era. One of them was the “Babygate” incident in 1991, when offensive lineman David Williams missed a game to attend the birth of his son. He was fined by Adams for violating his contract. Another controversy was the “Bounty Bowl” incident in 1989, when Glanville allegedly placed bounties on opposing players during a game against the Dallas Cowboys. 

The Oilers also had some bright spots in this era. They drafted some future stars such as Bruce Matthews, Mike Munchak, Ray Childress and Steve McNair. They also hired Jeff Fisher as their head coach in 1994. Fisher would go on to become the longest-tenured and most successful coach in franchise history. 

The Tennessee Years: 1997-Present 

The Tennessee Titans were founded in 1997 as the Tennessee Oilers by Bud Adams, who decided to relocate the franchise from Houston to Nashville. Adams made the move after failing to secure a new stadium deal in Houston and after facing declining attendance and fan support. The Oilers played their home games at Vanderbilt Stadium in 1998 and at Adelphia Coliseum (later renamed LP Field and Nissan Stadium) from 1999 onwards. 

The Oilers changed their name to the Titans in 1999, after a fan contest. The name was chosen to reflect the strength and power of the team and the city. The Titans also changed their logo and colors, adopting a navy blue, silver and red scheme. 

The Titans quickly established themselves as one of the dominant teams in the NFL. They won their first AFC Central title in 2000 and reached their first Super Bowl in 1999, where they lost to the St. Louis Rams 23-16 in Super Bowl XXXIV. The game was decided by a dramatic play known as “The Tackle”, when Rams linebacker Mike Jones stopped Titans receiver Kevin Dyson one yard short of the end zone as time expired. 

The Titans continued to be one of the elite teams in the NFL throughout the early 2000s. They won two more AFC South titles in 2002 and 2008. They also reached the AFC Championship Game twice, but lost to the Oakland Raiders in 2002 and the Baltimore Ravens in 2008. 

The Titans entered a period of decline after their last division title in 2008. They failed to make the playoffs for nine consecutive seasons between 2009 and 2017. They also struggled to find a consistent quarterback after McNair left in 2006. They tried several options such as Vince Young, Kerry Collins, Matt Hasselbeck, Jake Locker and Zach Mettenberger, but none of them could lead the team to glory. 

The Titans returned to prominence in the late 2010s under the leadership of coach Mike Vrabel and quarterback Ryan Tannehill. They won two consecutive AFC South titles in 2019 and 2020. They also reached the AFC Championship Game in 2019, where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 35-24. 

The Titans also had some memorable games and moments in this era. One of them was the “Music City Miracle” game in 2000, when they beat the Buffalo Bills 22-16 on a last-second lateral play that involved Frank Wycheck, Lorenzo Neal and Kevin Dyson. Another one was the “King Henry” game in 2020, when Derrick Henry rushed for 250 yards and two touchdowns against the Houston Texans to clinch the division title. 

The Titans also faced some challenges and disappointments in this era. They moved out of Adelphia Coliseum in 2015 and played at Nissan Stadium until present. They also had to compete with other teams for fans and media attention in Nashville, such as the Predators, who joined NHL in 1998 and reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 2017; and the Nashville SC, who joined MLS in 2020. 

The Titans also had some controversies and scandals in this era. One of them was the “Bud Adams” incident in 2009, when Adams was caught on camera making an obscene gesture at Buffalo Bills fans during a game. Adams was fined $250,000 by the NFL for his conduct. Another controversy was the “COVID-19” incident in 2020, when several Titans players and staff tested positive for coronavirus and caused multiple games to be rescheduled or postponed. 

The Titans also had some bright spots in this era. They drafted some promising players such as Chris Johnson, Jurrell Casey, Taylor Lewan, Marcus Mariota and A.J. Brown. They also hired Jon Robinson as their general manager in 2016. Robinson has been instrumental in building a competitive roster through savvy trades, drafts and free agency signings.
