Hurricanes vs Devils Betting Analysis

Two division rivals are on a collision course as the Carolina Hurricanes and New Jersey Devils go toe-to-toe in their Eastern Conference starting on Wednesday night.

The Metropolitan Division champion Hurricanes finished the regular season with a 52-21-9 record and eliminated the New York Islanders in six games in their first round series.

The Devils challenged the Canes for the Metro Division championship until the last day of the regular season, but fell just short at 52-22-8 record. While it did take seven games, the Devils prevailed over the New York Rangers to win their first playoff series since way back in 2012.

New Jersey collected one more point in a split season series (2-1-1) with Carolina (2-2) thanks to a shootout loss in their second meeting. The Devils shutout the Hurricanes 3-0 in their lone meeting after the All-Star break.

The goal differential was just as close as the record with the Devils winning the battle 13-11. Neither projected Game 1 starter, Frederick Andersen or Akira Schmid appeared in any of the regular season games

Hurricanes vs Devils on Offense

The Devils struggled to generate offense in the first round as a slow start by their top line limited their scoring potential. When the first round ended, only the Minnesota Wild averaged fewer goals per game than the Devils 2.43. Haula led the team in goals (4) and points (6).

The Hurricanes struggled to score for different reasons as Andrei Svechnikov missed the series after injuring his ACL in March.

Carolina averaged only 2.67 goals per gane and 9 of their 16 goals came in two games. On top of that, forward Teuvo Teravainen broke his hand in the first round and is now out indefinitely. Aho has stepped up, leading the team with four goals and seven points.

Hurricanes vs Devils on Defense

The Carolina Hurricanes finished both the regular and post-season with the 2nd best defense in the NHL after holding the New York Islanders to only 15 goals in the first round.

They have a veteran checking line of Jesper Fast, Jordan Staal and Jordan Martinook and a dominant penalty kill that stifled 94 4% of power plays during the playoffs.

The New Jersey Devils defense started the playoffs so poorly that it cost goaltender Vitek Vanecek his starting job.

They opted to utilize a defensive style similar to that of the Canes as they were content to stifle the Rangers entries until the opportunity came to spring their speedy forwards.

In the end, no team allowed fewer shots in the first round. John Marino and Ryan Graves log big minutes and the defensive minded Jonas Siegenthaler enables Dougie Hamilton to be more of an offensive player.

Hurricanes vs Devils Goaltending & Injuries

Nothing about the Hurricanes goaltending situation has been simple during the 2022-23 campaign as veterans Andersen, Antti Raanta and rookie Pyotr Kochetkov split the regular season three ways and none of them started more than five straight contests.

Raanta started the first five games against New York and was solid with a .906 save percentage. However after Raanta allowed three goals on 22 shots in Game 5, head coach Rod Brind’Amour went to the veteran Andersen.

He didn’t disappoint as he stopped 33 of 34 shots to end the Isles season. I would expect Brind’Amour to ride his hot hand.

Despite Andersen’s Game 6 heroics, Carolina finds themselves on the wrong side of a goaltending matchup for the second series in a row. Schmid was on fire for the Devils against a Rangers team that came two within two victories if the Stanley Cup Final a year ago. The rookie went 4-1 with a 1.38 GAA and .951 save percentage.

New Jersey will travel to North Carolina with a full compliment of players after Meier returned to the bench after taking a devastating hit from Rangers captain Jacob Trouba in Game 7.

Carolina has an injury ridled roster that we highlighted earlier but they will have forward Jack Drury back for Game 1 after missing a pair of games with an upper body injury. The Canes are so thin that MacKenzie MacEachern, who didn’t play during the regular season, played on Aho’s line for Game 6.

Hurricanes vs Devils Expert Prediction

The Hurricanes are 19-9 at PNC Arena since former team captain Brind’Amour took the coaching reigns in 2018.

They put together an outstanding effort against the Islanders but the injuries are stacking up and that makes for a serious gap in talent for this series.

The Devils also have a tremendous goaltending advantage with Schmid looking like a brick wall in net. This will still be a hard fought series but I’ll gladly roll with the healthy Devils at -130 to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.
