Calgary Flames vs Edmonton Oilers Analysis
After a pulsating Game 1 on Wednesday which saw 15 goals fly in from either direction, divisional rivals the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames will look to do it all over again in Game 2 as fans will no doubt hope for more of the same on Friday.
Calgary took a commanding 6-2 lead early in that game before Edmonton roared back to even it up at the start of the 3rd period, with Calgary eventually pulling away late.
The two teams faced each other four times during the regular season with both sides holding home ice advantage with a 2-2 series split.
Mike Smith Looks to Rebound
After allowing three goals over just the opening six minutes of Wednesday night’s game against Calgary, it would be easy to be despondent as a goalie who was in the firing line for the fastest opening two goals in playoff history.
However, that has been the exception rather than the rule for Mike Smith this season as he ranks as a top 20 goalie on the year with a +7.28 GSAA average (19th) and posting a .915 SV% on the season as well (24th).
The Flames Look to Get Back to Basicis
After allowing just five goals at home over their opening series win against Dallas, the Calgary Flames eclipsed that in a little over two periods in Wednesday’s Game 1 against the Oilers.
The Flames will no doubt look to compose themselves ahead of Game 2 and get back to what worked for them throughout the season, namely an effective defense.
Calgary ranked 3rd in the league this year on opponent goals allowed and 3rd on defensive xGA this season as well.
Calgary Flames vs Edmonton Oilers Game 2 Prediction
Despite everything pointing to both teams massively improving on defense ahead of Friday’s clash, we can’t help feeling we’re going to be in for another thriller here later tonight.
The Over has gone 14-6-1 in the two sides last 21 meetings in Calgary and both teams continue to be offensively blessed this year.
The Calgary Flames rank 2nd on total percentage of scoring chances this year, 4th on percentage of high danger scoring chances and 4th on overall offensive xG as well.
The Edmonton Oilers meanwhile have also been in red-hot form in front of goal this season, ranking 1st on high danger conversion rate, 3rd in offensive scoring over the playoffs so far and 1st on playoff shots to goal percentage this year as well.
While both teams will no doubt look for better defensive efforts tonight, we’re not sure they’re capable of delivering it and we’re going to take the Over 6.5 goals once again on Friday between the Oilers and Flames in Calgary.
Prediction: Over 6.5 Total Goals Scored
