Chicago Blackhawks vs Philadelphia Flyers Analysis
Two teams eliminated from the postseason clash on Monday night as the Philadelphia Flyers travel to take on the Chicago Blackhawks at the United Center.
After a six game losing streak, Philadelphia has had something of a mini-surge over their last two starts taking care of both the Montreal Canadiens and the Pittsburgh Penguins by consecutive 3 goal margins.
Chicago on the other hand have won just two of their last fourteen games overall with each of their last two losses coming via a 3 goal margin also.
The two teams have faced each other once already this season with Philadelphia pulling out a late come from behind victory against Chicago at the Wells Fargo Center early last month.
Philadelphia Looks to Build on Momentum
The Philadelphia Flyers would equal their longest winning streak of the season so far should they get the victory over the Chicago Blackhawks here on Monday.
However, that three game win streak for the Flyers back in December was topped off with a home win over the New Jersey Devils, while this time they’re forced to go on the road in order to equal that streak, a role they haven’t traditionally done well in.
The Flyers have gone just 15-36 over their last 51 games when entering in as a road underdog.
Shots Just Not Going in For Chicago
The Blackhawks have outshot two of their last three opponents overall, often by a substantial margin, as was the case against San Jose on Saturday night where they outshot the Sharks 28 to 19 in that game yet still managed to lose 4-1.
And that’s been an issue for Chicago all year long as the Blackhawks own one of the league’s lowest shots to goal percentages this season converting just 9.04% of all of their chances.
With the league’s third lowest expected differential on top, that may change moving forward but as of right now, the Blackhawks are having real difficulty converting the puck.
Chicago Blackhawks vs Philadelphia Flyers Prediction
With just three games under his belt, it’s been hard to get a true read on Philadelphia’s expected goalie Felix Sandstrom tonight, although his .897 SV% against Buffalo last time out at least puts him on par with Chicago’s expected starter Kevin Lankinen tonight who’s had one of the worst seasons out of any goalie in the league over 2021/22 with a .887 SV% and a -18.56 GSAA average also, which currently stands him 68th in the league.
Both Philadelphia and Chicago rank bottom seven in the league also this season in terms of overall opponent scoring, with the Flyers and Blackhawks allowing 3.58 & 3.57 goals against per game on average respectively to opponents, and both ranking bottom ten in overall opponent shooting as well.
On top of that, Philadelphia has given up the 7th most high danger scoring opportunities to opponents this season while Chicago’s opponents have converted at the 2nd highest rate in the league also, and that likely means we see goals in this matchup later tonight between the Flyers and the Hawks.
Prediction: Over 6.5 Total Goals
