Edmonton Oilers vs Minnesota Wild Analysis

The Minnesota Wild travel to Rogers Place in Edmonton for a Western Conference clash with the Oilers. It will be a quick turnaround for the Oilers after winning a matinee game 4-2 yesterday afternoon in Winnipeg.

The Wild will be looking to bounce back after being crushed 6-2 by the Florida Panthers on Friday night. Minnesota prevailed 4-1 in Edmonton in the only meeting between these teams back in December.

Oilers 5-0 Under Interim Coach Woodcroft

The Edmonton Oilers have been surging since they fired Dave Tippett and promoted Jay Woodcroft to be the new interim head coach. Under Woodcroft, the Oilers are 5-0 with a an average winning margin of 2.8 during stretch.

Superstar Connor McDavid found his rhythm once again with 10 points during the 5 game streak including two helpers in his last game. Leon Draisaitl scored two goals in the victory and Mike Smith got the win after saving 27 of 30 shots. He has a 5-4-1 record with a 3.31 GAA and .901 save percentage on the season. The Oilers rank 10th with 3.29 goals per game and 20th in goals allowed with 3.17 a game.

Not Wild About Road Games

The Minnesota Wild sit at 30-13-3 on the season after suffering a rare home loss against the Panthers. The road has been where the Wild struggle, as 11 of their 16 losses have been on road.

Kirill Kaprizov and Mats Zuccarello each had a goal and an assist in the game against Florida. Goalie Cam Talbot took the loss after allowing four goals on 34 shots. Talbot is 19-10-1 with 2.91 goals against average and .911 save percentage on the season. Talbot has struggled recently, he’s lost his last two starts with a troubling .859 save percentage and a GAA over 4.5.

Minnesota has struggled defensively, ranking 15th with 2.98 goals allowed per game. However, their offense is off the charts as they rank 3rd with 3.74 goals per game.

Edmonton Oilers vs Minnesota Wild Prediction

This game is a pick’em with both teams at -110 and a total of 6.5 goals. The Wild are 4-1 in their last 5 games against the Oilers. I honestly think that the Wild are the better team, but the Oilers are on a different level right now.

In their last four games, the Oilers have been on fire offensively with 17 goals and the defense has been stout with only six goals allowed during the that stretch. Cam Talbot has struggled recently and a road game against a hot team is an awful spot to try and turn things around.

Official Play: Edmonton Oilers -110

Hockey Betting 101 | What is the Puckline?

The puckline is hockey’s version of the point spread. When betting on the puckline, the favorite is -1.5 goals on the spread, with the underdog at +1.5 goals. Betting on the favorite requires your team to win its game by two or more goals. Conversely, betting on the underdog at +1.5 means that your team can either win the game or lose by one goal, and your ticket will still cash.

Since the majority of hockey betting is built around the moneyline, casual bettors might be turned off by laying larger prices with the top teams in the league. Instead of laying -200 or -250 on a strong favorite, a more attractive option might be laying -1.5 goals at a more reasonable price point. Conversely, it can be hard to pull the trigger on a +200 underdog that’s expected to lose their game over 60% of the time. Well, it gets a little easier to put your money on them if you’re getting a +1.5 goal head start.
