Los Angeles Kings vs Vancouver Canucks Analysis
Vancouver comes into this game as one of the hottest teams in the NHL. They have won 7 straight games and 9 out of their L10, posting over 3 goals per game on average in the 10 game span. That success can be attributed to a multitude of factors, they have shared the puck posting 5 assists per game and under 4 penalties per game. The Canucks have also benefited from some impressive play from their goalies in the L10, allowing just 1.8 goals on average and a .943 save percentage.
One of the biggest offensive production factors include 5 goals and 3 assists in the L10 from Brock Boeser but now he finds himself on the COVID list. Alongside Phillip Di Giuseppe, Tyler Myers and Brad Hunt, but Vancouver isn’t the only one with COVID issues as Los Angeles has also placed Cal Petersen and Phillip Danault on the injury report.
These two teams have met 4 times in the last three years and Vancouver has taken all 4 match-ups, including a 4-0 win earlier in December. That previous match-up falls in LA’s L10 games, where they have posted just a 5-4-1 record, and even though they have put up 2.6 goals per game, and just over 4 assists, the defense has allowed 2.6 goals and the goalies have put up a .916 save percentage.
While the Vancouver has put up the better numbers from their goalies in the L10 games, it looks as though the Canucks will have Halak in net, while the Kings put Jonathon Quick between the posts. Vancouver has struggled with Halak in the net, going just 1-4-1 in his 5 starts, while allowing 2.88 GAA and a .905 save percentage. Quick on the other hand has put up a .923 save percentage and allowing 2.42 GAA.
The real question is will the streak continue for Vancouver, and go beyond the 7 game stretch? This Canucks team is 12-2 when playing 3 or less games in a 10 day stretch in the last three seasons. All the while, Vancouver has posted 17 goals in the last five games and allowed just 10 in the last five, they are allowing teams to capitalize on the power play at a rate of 31.6%, luckily for them, they have minimized their penalty minutes.
Los Angeles is 12-4 after scoring 3+ goals in B2B games in the L2Y, but they are coming off a blowout loss in their last game. Although, coach McLellan is 11-4 as the coach of Los Angeles off a blowout loss of 3+ goals against a division rival. Los Angeles looks to capitalize on their 3.3 goal average against the division and keep their streaks alive, while looking to end the 7 game run of Vancouver.
Opinion: Los Angeles Kings (-135), as the Kings add to their 3.3 goal average against a struggling goalie for Vancouver.
