Montreal Canadians vs Vegas Golden Knights Analysis
Montreal heads to Las Vegas, as the last place team in the East takes on the top team in the Pacific. Not only is Montreal the last place team in the East, 21 points puts them at the bottom of the entire NHL. Although, Montreal has taken six out of the last nine games against Las Vegas and they are currently on a one game win streak, besting Las Vegas who has lost three straight games.
Canadians Can Use Some Help
To say that Montreal has struggled on the season may be an understatement. They sit in last place in goals per game, averaging just 2.2 goals on average, resulting in (-56) goal differential, which “leads” the league, one goal less then Arizona. Montreal has also hurt themselves with a multitude of penalties, sitting at #30 in the league, averaging over 10.6 penalty minutes per game! For tonight’s game, Montreal will put Sam Montembeault in the net, on the season, Montembeault has a .902 save percentage, allowing 3.72 goals per game and putting up a quality start in just 17% of his starts in the last 3 seasons.
The team is 1-5 in Montembeault’s last six starts and just 1-8 in his starts on the road. Yet, regardless of who is in the net for Montreal, they are 2-6-2 in their last 10 games (including 1-6 in the last seven), while allowing 4.2 goals to the opposition in the last five games. Montreal is coming off of a big win, a 5-3 win against Dallas, but the team is just 1-10 in their last 11 games off a win!
Vegas Looks to Bounce Back
Las Vegas comes into this game looking to extend their lead in the Pacific Division, and while they are still leading the division, they have been going through a little bit of a rough patch as of late. They have the advantage of definitely being the healthier team, with Montreal having multiple players questionable coming into Thursday’s game. Las Vegas has posted a 4-4-2 record in the last 10 games, including three straight losses and a 1-5 record in the last six games overall.
They have won just one out of their last six games on their home ice and have lost three straight games with Lehner in the net. Although, on the year, and in the last three seasons, Lehner has been a solid option in the net. He has stopped 90.4% of shots on goal this season, allowing just under three goals per game, resulting in a 15-11-1 record. Lehner has thrived in power play situations, stopping 96% of shots! Even though Las Vegas has lost in Lehner’s last three starts, prior to those three games, they cashed in on six straight games that Lehner started!
Lehner’s save percentage on the power play should be important against the 3rd most penalized team in the league, Las Vegas has controlled the penalty minutes on their side of the ice, sitting at #13 (8.22 minutes per game). This team is just (+19) in goal differential, which speaks volumes when the team is #6 in goals per game (3.45), we know the offense can put up goals, and Montreal averaging just over two goals per game, is a combination that should result in a Golden Knights victory.
Montreal Canadians vs Vegas Golden Knights Predictions
In the last week alone, Montreal has added six players to their list of key injured players, limiting the depth that Montreal can produce. Although, depth is really the biggest thing they are missing, while Vegas may have less players effected currently by injury, but they find themselves without their second leading goal scorer in Pacioretty. Both of these teams will look to get themselves out of the disappointing stretch in the last six (or seven) games.
Prediction: Las Vegas (-1.5 goals) & OVER six goals. Both teams are off games where they put up 5+ goals and Montreal is allowing over four goals per game in the last five. I expect Las Vegas to take advantage and attack early and often. Both these teams are capable of scoring, and both the defenses are capable of giving up a multitude of goals.
