New York Islanders vs San Jose Sharks Analysis
The winless San Jose Sharks head to New York on Tuesday night looking to rebound off a really poor defensive effort against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday, giving up five goals over the final two periods of that game after initially enjoying a two-goal lead early.
They’ll be facing a New York Islanders team here on Tuesday coming off a monster 7-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday themselves, with the Islanders’ defense being on point in that game giving up just 23 shots total to the Ducks.
The Sharks and Islanders met twice last season with New York losing both of those games in OT.
Sharks Look Toothless On Defense
That five-goal drubbing San Jose received against Chicago at the weekend was likely always in the post for this team as only two teams rank worse than the Sharks do overall this season on defensive xGA.
On top of that, the Sharks are also giving up the second most offensive shots to opponents this year along with the second most high-danger scoring opportunities also, so they might well need a huge game from James Reimer tonight (expected) if they’re going to stay in this one.
Islanders Relish Bully Role
The New York Islanders have often come up short on several occasions over recent seasons against the top teams in the league, but against teams boasting a win percentage of 40% or less, the Islanders have been flat-track bullies in that role.
The Islanders have an impressive 39-16 record (70.9%) of taking the W when facing sub-par teams and have won five of the last seven against this same Sharks team when playing in New York as well.
New York Islanders vs San Jose Sharks Prediction
There’s only one way we can look in this one and that’s by taking the Islanders here on Tuesday.
The Islanders rank joint 7th in the league this season on overall offensive scoring after their blowout victory over Anaheim at the weekend, and that’s combined with a top ten ranking on total offensive shots per game as well.
So with all of San Jose’s defensive issues to start the season, we expect the Islanders to roll in this one. Take the New York Islanders -1.5 to cover on the puck line at a juicy +135 as your NHL play for Tuesday.
Prediction: New York Islanders -1.5 (+135)
