New York Rangers vs Pittsburgh Penguins Analysis
The Pittsburgh Penguins will look for a bounceback effort here on Thursday after dropping five of their last seven games overall, two of which came against these very same New York Rangers.
The Rangers, meanwhile, have won just one of their last three games overall themselves, but did bounce back nicely on Tuesday, restricting the New Jersey Devils to just 21 shots on goal in a 3-1 win.
This will be the team’s fourth and final meeting of the season with the Rangers taking each of the last two after dropping the opening game against the Penguins 1-0 on the road back in February.
Pittsburgh With A Point To Prove
With the possibility of both of these sides meeting in the first round of the playoffs, Pittsburgh still has a point to prove after getting swept aside late last month in their first visit to New York against the Rangers.
The Rangers ran out easy 5-1 winners in that game with Chris Kreider getting two goals and the Penguins getting restricted to just 21 total shots on goal in that game.
The Penguins were quick to call that performance an outlier however and will be expecting a much better showing here tonight in their return trip to New York.
New York’s Strong Home Form
The Rangers have gone 22-7-4 this season inside Madison Square Garden, but did lose two of their most recent games here against the Flyers and Islanders respectively.
This pick’em / small underdog role is where the Rangers have thrived this season. At the time of posting, most books have the Rangers as a small home favorite, but there are some pick’ems out there and the Penguins opened as a small road favorite at some places.
It doesn’t appear that New York will go off as the underdog, but nonetheless, the Rangers have won six of their last seven games as a home underdog.
New York Rangers vs Pittsburgh Penguins Prediction
We’re taking the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight on the road to get the win over the New York Rangers.
The Penguins got blasted for six goals in Tuesday night’s loss against the Colorado Avalanche but are a perfect 5-0 in their last five matchups when coming off a game in which they gave up five goals or more to opponents off a loss.
With Igor Shesterkin expected in nets tonight for the Rangers, and with the Russian deservedly ranking as the No. 1 goalie in the league this season posting an absolutely stellar +36.28 GSAA average on the year, his more recent performances haven’t been nearly as good, putting up a mere .886 SV% since March 10th.
Take the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight to even the series with a road win in New York against the Rangers on Thursday.
