Penguins vs Panthers Analysis

The Florida Panthers head into Pittsburgh on Tuesday night in absolutely sizzling form offensively, banking six goals in back-to-back games for only the second time all season.

The Penguins meanwhile have won three of their last four games overall but have been incredibly patchy at home of late, winning just two of their last six inside PPG Paints Arena against some fairly average teams, New Jersey, Detroit and Seattle among them.

The two teams have faced off against each other twice already this season with both teams holding serve at home, but getting pushed into OT respectively.

Panthers Can Do No Wrong Offensively

Coming off back-to-back six-goal efforts across their last two games, it’s been an extremely impressive season offensively for this Florida Panthers team, with possibly the most dangerous aspect being their ability to spread the scoring in games as well, with ten different players getting on the scoresheet across their last two games.

With the highest goals per game numbers in the league this season at a phenomenal 4.13 goals per game (for comparison Tampa Bay posted 3.47 goals per game last season as league leaders), and the league’s best xG numbers overall this season also, it’s been rare to find this Panthers team wanting in front of nets this year.

Penguins Struggling at Home

While the Penguins are 15-8-5 at home this season overall, since the start of 2022, Pittsburgh has found themselves barely above .500 in that regard and will need to improve that struggling home form if they’re going to make a big playoff push over the back end of the season.

What should help with that however is their rock-solid defense this year which has given up just 2.58 goals per game on average this year, the league’s fourth-best overall opponent average.

On top of that, the Penguins are allowing the fourth-fewest opponent shots to goal percentage as well this season along with the league’s fewest power play goals against also.

Penguins vs Panthers Prediction

This looks set to be a true offense vs defense clash here on Tuesday, but with Sergei Bobrovsky and Tristan Jarry expected in nets for both teams tonight, it’s likely defense wins out in this one.

Both Bobrovsky and Jarry rank top-15 in the league overall this season on GSAA average and both are top ten in number of quality starts this year as well.

While Florida is no doubt known for their explosive offense this season, it’s been their defense which has arguably been undervalued, giving up just 2.88 goals per game to opponents this year and ranking top-ten in the league on defensive expected goals against also.

We’re looking towards taking the under 6.5 goals here on Tuesday in what should be an extremely competitive game between the Florida Panthers and Pittsburgh Penguins.
