Pittsburgh Penguins vs Los Angeles Kings Analysis

Both of these teams are looking ahead to the playoffs and they are both making a solid push as of late. Both Los Angeles and Pittsburgh are 4-1 in their last five games, and combined they have allowed just 23 goals (including just 4 goals allowed in the 1st period). The offenses have been hot too, combining for an impressive 42 goals, slightly over eight combined goals per game.

Guentzel and Jarry Lead the Penguins

Jake Guentzel leads the way from Pittsburgh putting up 35 points thus far in the year. He has put 18 goals in the net, and assisted on 17 goals, even though he has only appeared in 29 of Pittsburgh’s 35 games. Anze Kopitar is the leading scorer coming from the Los Angeles Kings, while he has just nine goals, he has been sharing the love, putting up 21 assists so far, for a total of 30 points.

It also looks as though Pittsburgh will have their top-tier goalie in the net in Tristan Jarry. Jarry sits towards the top as one of the best goalies in the league currently, posting an impressive .932 SV% and allowing 1.91 GAA. Pittsburgh has a 18-6-4 record with Jarry in net, while getting a quality start in 20 out of 28 games in net, and stopping .944% of shorthanded shots. Although, Jarry has had a solid run that has reached beyond just this season. Jarry has a .920 SV% in the L3Y, allowing just 2.4 GAA, which has led to a 63-27-8 record and a 62% quality start percentage.

Kings Lean on Quick

The Los Angeles Kings look to have Jonathan Quick in net tonight. Quick is 10-8-4 on the year, he has stopped 92.1% of shots, allowing 2.40 GAA. In the last 3 years Quick has posted a 37-39-10 record, he has allowed 227 goals in 86 games (2.70 GAA), resulting in a .907 SV% and picking up quality starts in exactly half of his games.
Pittsburgh is 21-14 on the season, including 11-7 on the road, posting an average of 3.3 goals, on the season & on the road.

Yet as I mentioned before, Pittsburgh has won four of their last five (and six of last seven), and in those five games, Pittsburgh is putting up five goals per game, 12 of which were in the first period. Los Angeles is 12-5 in non-conference games, but they are exactly at .500 on the year (18-18), winning 12 of the 22 games they have played on their home ice. Los Angeles has put up 17 goals in the last five games (3.4 goals/game), but the astonishing number is the fact that they have allowed just nine goals in the last five games, hold teams to under two goals per game!

Pittsburgh Penguins vs Los Angeles Kings Predictions

Pittsburgh/Los Angeles UNDER 1.5 goals in the first period. Tough one, do you take the defenses that have only allowed four goals in the first period in the last five games? Or do you take the offenses that have put up 16 goals in the first period in the last five games? I am rolling with the defenses, with Jarry in net, I don’t foresee Los Angeles being able to score (they only have three goals in the first period anyways). Pittsburgh very well may be able to add one goal to their total in the first period, but no more than that.
