Pittsburgh Penguins vs St Louis Blues Analysis

This NHL match-up is definitely one that has the makings of an exciting game. Two of the hottest teams in the NHL, with the Penguins coming in on a 8-1-1 run, alongside the Blues who are 7-1-2 in their L10 games! Yet that may not be the most exciting part of this game, these two teams are looking just about as close to full-strength as they have been all year.

Pittsburgh has Tristan Jarry back in net, while he has been on the block for a while, Jarry still sits among the league leaders in SV% and GAA, on top of winning his last five starts. He has also recorded a quality start in 75% of his outings, and in his last three seasons, he has kept a .919 save percentage.

St. Louis is getting most of their players back for this game, but the same cannot be said about their play-by-play crew and the coaching staff. St. Louis Blue’s will have Drew Bannister behind the bench w/ assistant coaches Mike Van Ryn & Steve Ott both out with COVID.

Blues had more assistant coaches out than players w/ defenseman Robert Bortuzzo being sidelined. Which leaves Blues w/ only 7 defensemen & they skated forward Nathan Walker on the defensive side at practice. The team joked about throwing him into the net with his versatility. Even the Blue’s play-by-play announcing crew is running low.

In the last five games, both teams have put up 20 goals themselves, while St. Louis has allowed just 12, and Pittsburgh has allowed just 11!

When you look at these two offenses, and you single out the first period, these two teams have allowed just 3 goals in the opening period, Pittsburgh has been able to put up goals themselves, but neither team has allowed the opposition to come out hot. That, alongside the fact that the Penguins are 10-2 under against teams who capitalize on >19% of their power play opportunities, means we should be in store for a low scoring affair, but exciting none-the-less with the near full power teams!

Opinion : Under 1.5 goals in the first period
