Rangers vs Capitals Analysis
The Capitals have won five straight on the road and will look to take that form into New York here on Thursday. Washington has also covered four of those five on the road against the puckline as well.
This will be the teams’ second meeting this season after Washington ran out 5-1 winners in New York back on opening night in October.
Capitals Hot on the Road
The Capitals look to tie their third longest road streak in franchise history with another win against the Rangers here on Thursday.
Washington boasts a red-hot 16-5-4 mark on the road this season, putting up 23 goals across those five road games in the process as well.
With the Capitals having a full week off to prepare for this game, that’s going to be another advantage for them here as Washington have gone 17-7 over their last 24 games when coming in off 3 or more days of rest.
Shesterkin Continues to Impress
Igor Shesterkin, who is expected in nets tonight for the Rangers, continues to impress this season, boasting the league’s best numbers overall, so it comes as absolutely no surprise to see him as the clear front-runner this season at +120 to lift the Vezina Trophy later in the year.
However, this New York offense could do with matching that level of performance as the Rangers rank bottom half in the league this year on overall offensive capability, ranking 16th on goals per game and 28th on shots per game respectively.
Rangers vs Capitals Prediction
While this Capitals’ offense has put up a colossal average of 4.6 goals per game over their last five road starts, we just don’t see anywhere near that same level of production happening here for them on Thursday.
The Capitals’ last three road wins came against 65th ranked Montembeault (Canadiens), 63rd ranked Martin Jones (Flyers) and 4th ranked Saros (Predators) who arguably had one of his worst nights of the season against the Capitals last Tuesday posting a .889 SV%.
We’re looking towards taking the Washington Capitals team total under 2.5 goals here on Thursday night against the New York Rangers.
Igor Shesterkin is playing absolutely lights out right now in nets for the Rangers, posting the league’s highest overall GSAA average at +30.69 (no other goalie comes remotely close), and his quality start percentage is the highest in the league also at 80.6%.
On top of that, the Rangers rank top ten in the league this season on opponent high danger conversion rate, allowing just 10.7% of all chances inside the slot area to opponents this season to be converted into goals.
Take the Washington Capitals team total under 2.5 goals here on Thursday night against the New York Rangers.
