Rangers vs Islanders Analysis
The New York Islanders will take on the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night. The Rangers improved to 38-17-5 after beating the Anaheim Ducks 4-3 at home in overtime.
Meanwhile the Islanders dropped to 24-24-9 after losing a 4-3 shootout in Washington against the Capitals. The Rangers won the lone head-to-head meeting on the road 4-1 back in November.
Islanders Three Game Win Streak Ends
The New York Islanders came into their last game as a slight underdog to the Washington Capitals and lost a nail-bitter 4-3 in a shootout. Brock Nelson and Noah Dobson each had two points in the loss and goalie Semyon Varlamov stopped 29 of 32 shots faced.
The Islanders sit at 10th place in the Eastern Conference, but are far from the playoffs as they are 19 points behind the 8th place Washington Capitals. Defense and goaltending haven’t been the issue for this team, they rank 6th in goals allowed per game.
First string goaltender Ilya Sorokin has a 20-12-7 record with a 2.33 goals against average and .925 save percentage. Offense has been a different story, as they rank 24th in goals per game and 25th in shots per game on the season. Mathew Barzal leads the team with only 38 points.
However they have improved recently as they have scored three goals or more in 8 of their last 9 games.
Rangers Patrol League With Second Straight Victory
The New York Rangers got the job done in overtime with a 4-3 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. Adam Fox scored a goal and had two assists while Artemi Panarin had three helpers of his own.
Goaltender Alexander Georgiev stopped 20 of 23 shots faced. The Rangers currently sit at 5th place in the Eastern Conference with a five point lead over the 8th place Washington Capitals.
Starting goaltender Igor Shesterkin has been amazing between the pipes with a 29-7-3 record, 2.07 goals against average and .938 save percentage. Artemi Panarin leads the team with 71 points, while Chris Kreider is tied for second in the league with 39 points.
Goaltending has been huge for this team as they rank 22nd in shots against while ranking 3rd in goals against. The Rangers also make the most of their shots, ranking 29th in shots per game but 17th in goals per game.
Rangers vs Islanders Prediction
The New York Rangers are favored by a -140 money line and +175 on the -1.5 puck line. The Islanders are underdogs with a +120 money line and -210 on the +1.5 puck line.
The total for this contest is set at 5.5. This is going to be a great game between two teams eager to make up ground in the Eastern Conference.
Both teams have been hot with the Islanders winning three of their last four and the Rangers winning their prior two games.
The Rangers have far better offensive weapons with Panarin and Kreider. I also think that the Islanders will struggle to find the back of the net with a brick wall like Shesterkin between the pipes.
We are going to back the Rangers with the majority of our bet on the money line and a sprinkle on the puck line, ensuring that we profit with a victory.
Prediction: New York Rangers money line -140 with a sprinkle on the +175 puck line.
*(25% of your bet on the puck line to ensure a profit with an outright victory)
