Washington Capitals vs Edmonton Oilers Analysis

Washington welcomes Edmonton to the Capital One Arena on Wednesday night with both teams continuing to see-saw in form this season and looking for more consistency. This will be the teams first meeting of a two game series this season.

Edmonton’s Dynamic Duo Not Firing

Both Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid, the previous two season’s league MVP winners, have failed to really show up for Edmonton in big moments.

McDavid has just two goals and two points across his last three games overall, registering just two shots total in the Oilers blowout win against Montreal on Saturday.

Draisaitl also has just two points over his last three games, with two blanks interspersed over those three games as well. He played well against Montreal for the brief time he was on the ice, he failed to show up against either Ottawa or Nashville in the two games either side of that performance. And that’s been the story of this Edmonton team pretty much all season.

Washington’s Team Chemistry

Despite having issues of their own of late, Washington’s come from behind performance against Pittsburgh on Tuesday night showed how resilient this Capitals team are right now.

Pittsburgh dominated on overall possession and power play opportunities in that game yet couldn’t find the closer to see off a dogged Washington performance.

Returning home tonight, Washington will need to find that same level of energy here if they’re to overcome an Edmonton team looking to go into the break off the back of a solid win.

Washington Capitals vs Edmonton Oilers Prediction

Both Mikko Koskinen and Ilya Samsonov, the two men expected in nets on Wednesday for the Oilers and Capitals respectively, have been sub-par this season, with both having a negative overall GSAA average on the year and both owning sub .500 records in quality start percentage and bordering .900 SV% on the year.

Offensively, the Capitals rank top ten in the league on xG data this season and also rank 6th on total scoring chances created as well.

Edmonton also rank 6th this season on high danger scoring chances from inside the slot area that are converted to goals, so with both teams firing going forward this year, this one could well turn into a bit of a back and forth affair between two offensive heavy teams here on Wednesday.

We’re recommending a play on the Over 6 goals between the Edmonton Oilers and Washington Capitals on Wednesday.
