Washington Capitals vs Pittsburgh Penguins Betting Analysis

It’s been seven straight losses now for the Pittsburgh Penguins heading into Wednesday’s matchup against Washington, marking their longest losing streak in league action in well over 15 years.

They face a Washington Capitals team later tonight that while coming off a win of their own, are in some pretty poor form themselves over the last few weeks, losing four of their last five games overall.

These two teams faced each other four times last season with the Capitals taking the series 3-1 overall by a combined 18-11 goal margin.

Crosby Looking To Rebound Against His Old Foe

Despite a protracted losing streak for the Penguins heading into this matchup, and certainly one captain Sidney Crosby hasn’t experienced too often over the course of his career, the Nova Scotia native likely won’t find a more suitable foe in order to snap that losing streak tonight than the Washington Capitals.

Crosby has owned this Capitals team over the course of his career, putting up 84 points from 28 goals and 56 assists over 64 career games against Washington, and will no doubt look to replicate that stellar form later tonight also.

Defensively Washington Remains Suspect

Washington actually ranks ahead of Pittsburgh this year in goals against per game, averaging 2.93 GAPG compared with Pittsburgh’s 3.67.

However, the underlying data paints a very different picture this season defensively, with the Capitals ranking as the 5th worst team in the league overall this season on defensive xGA, along with 26th on total opponent scoring opportunities as well.

It’s hard to jump in on a team coming off seven consecutive losses over recent games, however, the data clearly points in one direction here and that’s in taking the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight to get the road win in Washington.

The Penguins have been arguably unlucky this year as they’re shipping a mammoth 17.0% of all their high-danger scoring opportunities to opponents this season, an extraordinarily high percentage and one only topped by Minnesota.

If the Penguins can curb that tonight, they’re clearly the better team in this one, at least data-wise, ranking 7th in the league on overall offensive xG this season and 8th on scoring chances created as well, and we like them to get the win tonight in DC.

Take the Pittsburgh Penguins to snap their losing streak later tonight and bounce back with a road win against the Washington Capitals.
