Segunda Division Newcomers
Deportivo Alaves, Levante and Granada all took the drop down to the Segunda Division last season in Spanish La Liga, and new squads from Girona and Real Valladolid make up two of this year’s favorites to go right back down.
Last season saw an incredibly tight battle being waged at the foot of the table with just one point separating four teams (Granada, Cadiz, Mallorca and Getafe) from the drop, with that all-important point eventually making the difference as Granada lost their top flight status on 38 points.
In terms of expected points, however, those four teams had a much greater spread, with the gap between 14th-place Cadiz and 19th-place Granada coming in at almost a 7.00x points gap.
Can The Champs Hold Their Ground?
Last year’s Segunda Division champions, Almeria, is expected to stay up this season and it’s no surprise after a red-hot campaign which saw them finish up the regular season with a W24, D9, L9 overall record.
They’ve been busy in the off-season as well bringing in center-back Kaiky from Brazilian Serie A side Santos FC and former Partizan Belgrade striker Marko Milovanovic also to ensure they’ll have the best possible chance of survival in La Liga ahead of this season.
The other two promoted teams, Real Valladolid and Girona, are not expected to do as well however with both being priced up as the two favorites for the drop this season. That’s despite Valladolid finishing with the same points as Almeria last season, but not adding as much in the off-season to bolster their squad as Almeria has done.
2022-23 La Liga Relegation Odds
The best value on the board by far this year is actually a team who got extremely fortunate last season and that’s Elche.
Elche finished the year in mid-table 13th position last season and on the surface looked reasonably safe, finishing the year going unbeaten in three of their final home games to secure their top flight La Liga status.
But the expected points table shows a much different story with Elche ranking bottom of the league overall with a 6.33 PTS/xPTS differential and the league’s worst xPTS record over 2022 as well, and that spells huge trouble for a team who have added just one player to their roster over the summer transfer window.
Elche is the books’ third favorites to go down this season at +150 and we’re in full agreement with that line and are taking Elche to get relegated this season in Spanish LaLiga.
