Argentina vs Venezuela Betting Preview

WagerTalk soccer handicapper Kevin Dolan offers his Argentina vs Venezuela betting preview for Friday, March 25 as part of CONMEBOL’s World Cup qualifying. Argentina won the reverse fixture 3-1 between these two in Caracas back in September after Venezuelan defender Luis Martinez was sent off for a reckless challenge in the first half of that game.

Argentina vs Venezuela Analysis

A David vs Goliath type clash on Friday as two-time World Cup winners Argentina host bottom-of-the-group Venezuela, a team that has never even qualified for a World Cup previously, in the Estadio Antonio Vespucio Liberti in Buenos Aires ahead of this weekend.

Argentina has already qualified for November’s tournament and will look see this as a chance to hone tactics before the big dance later in the year against a team in Venezuela who will be forced to look ahead to 2026’s campaign as their potential inaugural World Cup entry point.

Venezuela’s Less-Than-Watertight Defense

It’s been a World Cup 2022 campaign to forget so far for last placed Venezuela. Just three wins from 16 in the group stage has left them stranded at the foot of the table, a full three points back from their nearest rivals Paraguay.

A lot of Venezuela’s issues have come on the defensive end also as ‘La Vinotinto’ have conceded 30 goals over this campaign so far, including two or more goals in half of those matches also, and coupled with the worst negative goal difference out of any team in the CONMEBOL competition.

Argentina Keeping One Eye on History

It’s been a fantastic campaign for Argentina so far over 2021/22 as the ‘Albiceleste’ have yet to lose a single game over qualifying to date and with a current 29 match unbeaten run in international competition over the last three years on the line, thoughts must now be turning to equaling or bettering Italy’s historic 37 match unbeaten run which ended against Spain late last year.

With just two games remaining in qualification before November’s tournament proper, it’ll be interesting to see whether or not Lionel Scaloni’s side can eclipse that historic feat in the heat of a major finals.

Argentina vs Venezuela Prediction

At odds of nearly -600 to win this game outright on Friday night, Argentina present little value on the outright markets here but we do believe Scaloni will place an emphasis on defense in this match as he looks to fine tune his side in time for November.

Argentina haven’t shipped a goal in six-straight home matches now and have averaged just 0.25 goals per game to opponents at home across the entire South American campaign.

While Venezuela’s team total under 1.5 goals looks extremely likely in this one, at -2500 it also presents little appeal here but we do see that as an overall measure of how this game will play out as we expect a slower, more sedate pace here on Friday as Venezuela sit back and try to contain Argentina while Scaloni looks to continue to tinker with his squad.

With influential Inter striker Lautaro Martinez out of this game also through Covid, the second highest goalscorer in the CONMEBOL qualification campaign so far, we expect Argentina to come in under their 2.5 team total here and deliver a low scoring win on Friday against Venezuela.

Take the Argentina’s team total under 2.5 goals at -138 as the soccer play for Friday.
