Atalanta vs Leverkusen Analysis
Coming off a solid draw against Bundesliga front runners Bayern Munich over the weekend, Bayer Leverkusen heads to Italy on Thursday looking for a positive result against Serie A squad, Atalanta.
Atalanta, meanwhile, continues to slide down the Serie A table with just one win over their last seven games in domestic league action, and another defeat to Roma over the weekend has seen them slip out of European contention for next season.
Both teams will be targeting this competition as potential silverware this season and with no previous form between the two, it should make for an interesting game in Bergamo on Thursday night.
Leverkusen Proving No Pushovers This Season
Bayer Leverkusen has shown their metal this season after a somewhat disappointing 2020-21 campaign.
‘Die Werkself’ have got themselves firmly in the Champions League picture this season sitting third in the table and have posted the second-best away form this year as well, losing just one of their last eight games overall.
The one downside for Leverkusen ahead of this game however is their record over in Italy, with the Germans winning just one of their last ten previous visits here, that coming over 20 years ago.
Atalanta’s Dented Confidence
After a bright start to their Serie A campaign, Atalanta was third in the table on December 15th but the wheels have well and truly came off ‘La Dea’s’ title ambitions this season.
Just three wins total over their last ten games across all competitions has seen them slip out of European contention and they’ll need a big performance here on Thursday night to restore some much-needed confidence.
However, that may be easier said than done as Atalanta have an extremely poor home record this season with just four wins at home all year in Serie A and had just one win in total across the Champions League group stages here as well, that to European minnows Young Boys.

While history may be on Atalanta’s side here considering they’ve gone unbeaten in 17 of their previous 20 Europa League/UEFA Cup matches and have never lost at home in this competition either, facing a Leverkusen team on Thursday that are coming off three straight knockout stage losses in this competition over recent years, we nevertheless have to trust current form here and go with Leverkusen in this one.
On current form, Bayer Leverkusen are the clear value side in this one catching a half goal headstart and they showed in Saturday’s draw on the road against Bayern Munich that even without the services of top scorer Patrik Schick, they are still an extremely solid side.
