Bayer Leverkusen vs Atalanta Analysis
After a pulsating 3-2 back and forth encounter in their first leg just last week, Atalanta make the return trip back to Germany on Thursday in order to see out the tie and progress on to the next round.
Atalanta’s Domestic vs European Road Form
While Atalanta slip ever further out of the top-four picture in Serie A, their road form this season has been absolutely solid, ranking as the third-best road team in the league overall this year with 30 points gained from just 14 games.
However, that excellent road form hasn’t translated over to European competition where they’ve won just one of their last four European away games and have conceded an average of two goals per game across those four European road starts as well.
Leverkusen’s Lack of Luck
Bayer Leverkusen’s preparation for this game was severely hampered at the weekend by the news of a season ending injury to young midfield star Florian Wirtz in their game against FC Koln.
Wirtz provided an assist for Aranguiz’s opening goal in that first leg against Atalanta and has averaged the Bundesliga’s second-highest assist rate also behind only Thomas Muller of Bayern Munich this season, so his absence will be keenly felt for the Germans ahead of this game.
Bayer Leverkusen vs Atalanta Prediction
It’s difficult to look past more goals happening in this game between Atalanta and Leverkusen on Thursday.
Leverkusen especially have been incredibly leaky at the back this season, keeping just one clean sheet across their last 17 competitive games in all and have conceded multiple goals in over half of those matchups also.
While Wirtz will no doubt be a huge miss in link-up play here for the home side on Thursday, Leverkusen still have a ton of attacking threat at their disposal and the Germans have averaged a colossal 3.1 goals per game across their last ten home matches.
We expect no different here and with Atalanta’s patchy defensive record on the road over in Europe themselves, we’re gonna look towards taking the over 2.75 (or 3) goals on Thursday between Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen over in the Europa League.
